Hunting Coyotes with .22's?

I shot a coyote yesterday, when I first saw it it was a 20 yards and I had a .22lr in hand. The bugger took off in a hurry but made the mistake of stopping at 115 yards, I had switched to my daughter's 6.5X55 by then and shot it with that instead. I would not have shot it at that distance with the .22lr...

.22 cal is too small... Coyotes in the east can go 60 pounds plus... According to the DNA testing done in New York State and Ontario recently they rarely mix with dogs.... but they have lots of Grey-Wolf DNA, hence the large packs and bigger sized animals
If you see a 65 pound coyote all furred up in the winter he WILL look as big as a German Shepard :!:

Well me and a buddy put the hurt on a pair of coyotes last winter. The male was 39 lbs, and the female was 35 lbs. We first saw this pair at about 500 yards, a couple of barks and a howl brought them right in to 115 yards, one shot from the 7X57 was all it took for both of them. For my hunting area, these were average sized song dogs. I have shot bigger, and I have shot smaller. Is a 100 lb coyote possible? Yes, but not normal, I would say it had some cross breeding going there.

Now back to the original question...my opinion is that the 22 lr is too small for coyotes. Having said that, I have shot one with a 22 mag, but it took two shots from 125 yards to do it. After that, I would not try any rimfire again against any coyote at any distance. A 22 centerfire would be my absolute minimum, and this winter, my 243 is gonna open a can of whoop ass on the local 'yotes!

Id like to see a yote that broke 70lbs or even 50 lbs that would be huge and 100 lb yote :?: :?: thats 1 I would have to see with my own eyes , seeing I own a couple dogs around 100lbs

Your Eastern wolves are breeding with the coyotes??

Hell all our Western wolves want to do is eat them! LoL

coyotes with 22

When i was about 13 out shooting gophers I spotted a coyote about 150 yards. I aimed about a foot over it's back and let the shot off. It yelped, turned, and ran for about 200 yards and fell over. couldn't find an entry or exit hole (obviously not an exit hole). It was pretty cool, but I wouldn't go looking for coyotes with a 22.

The MNR started sampling coyote and wolf DNA in the early 90's... they found that the eastern coyote had DNA from grey wolves. They found no evidence to support the theory that dogs and coyotes interbreed with any regularity.

I have weighed a few bigger coyotes at my workplace and so far the largest brought it was 55 lbs. The largest I have shot was a female at 45lbs. But I have seen bigger ! We see a large varience in color here, from blonde to one that was shot that was jet black.

The largest recorded coyote, from the Maritimes, weighed 82 lbs, and was taken at Bonavista, NFLD (see link below). A coyote has long, thick hair, which makes many people think they are huge "like a german sheppard". A friend of mine shot a female coyote a few years ago, here in NS. A very experienced deer hunter, he guessed it weighed 40 to 50 lbs.....it weighed 26 lbs.

Well I live in the country and have seen yotes as close as 50 yards to the house. AS a size comparison...I have a shephard/rotti mix...she stands 27 inches at the shoulder...has a chest of 43 inches and weighs in at 110+ pounds. Some yotes that I have seen are every bit as big as my hound. Now granted they were leaner so I guesstimate that they weighed in anywhere from 80-100 pounds.

I bet there is a plaque on your mantle that sais "Lawyers, Hunters, Fishermen and Other Liers Are Welcome!" ;)

coyote hunters that i know will carry a .22 and use it if a coyote has been cornered by the dogs and they want to get in close for a shot . they use .223, 22/ 250 and .243 for shots at any distance .

theres good advice, yotes arent wimps of the animal kingdom, and I have seen ones that have chewed there own leg off to get out of a trap, dont underestimate the strength and survivability of a yote there a tuff critter .

and wounding animals sucks but doing it knowing your not matching species and caliber is foolish IMHO :D

X2

When I was younger, my old man brought one home in the back of his truck with a thru and thru lungshot. Well after he drove all the way home (had to have been a 1/2 hour drive at least)... The damn thing came back around and it was gasping trying to get a breath. We had to choke it out.

Yotes, unlike lynx, do NOT just fall over and die willingly
