hunting coyotes with a .308?

Well it just depends on what part of Ontario your in.

from the regs:
The holder of a small game licence may not use a rifle of
greater calibre than .275, except a flintlock or percussion
cap muzzle-loading gun, for hunting small game in the
counties of Brant, Elgin, Essex, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex,
Northumberland, Oxford, Perth and Wellington and the
regional municipalities of Chatham/Kent, Durham, the
former regional municipalities of Haldimand-Norfolk and
Hamilton-Wentworth, Halton, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and
York and the City of Toronto.
No offence but if this is true...
The people in Ontario that make these reg's are f'd up!
So you are supposed to go squirrel or grouse hunting with a 30 cal! What the hell would be left? Honestly common sense isn't that common any more.

This as just to explain why some peope thing nothing greater then a .270 can be used in Ontario. I was just giving the regulation for areas that are limited to that caliber.

Here is the whole reg for small game in Ontario.

In an area where there is an open gun season for deer,
moose or black bear, if you are the holder of a small game
licence you may not possess or use a rifle of greater
calibre or projectile power than a .22 calibre rim-fire rifle
chambered to .22 short, .22 long or .22 long rifle shells or
shells loaded with ball or with shot larger than No. 2 shot
(or if using non-toxic shot, you may not use steel shot larger
than triple BBB steel shot, or bismuth shot that is larger
than double BB bismuth shot), unless you possess a valid
licence to hunt deer, moose or black bear as the case may be.

Yes, I know that, because unlike many here, I DO read the regs. It just bugs me when guys that live in these municipalities think because they can't use anything bigger than a .270, that the rest of us can't either...;)

That really doesn't explain anything. If you are in these townships, you can't use a .30-30 for coyotes, but you can use a .270 Weatherby Magnum. Explain the rational on that one...:D

I visited a senior Ministry officail about 30 years ago with a 270Win and a 44 mag cartridge and asked why it was that one was legal on deer and one was not. I could not see the safety issue.

He said the rule was introduced a long tome ago when the market was flooded with cheap 303 ammo that was posing a danger.

Seems to me that the better hunder ed now plus the lack of surplus 303 means it is time to change the law.

The problem with changing it is, it might get worse.;)

They could implement a .22 cal only restriction for small game, or a diameter AND cartridge length restriction...
