Hunting Deer With A .223?

Ever shot a small Island deer with a 223?

R.

nope, never have and never will, also never had a can of that Dinty Moore stew, either, seen it on the shelf, but have never grabbed one, looks good but, the ingreds don't say much for your health. Not sure what these "small" Island deer are all about, but please forgive me if I have the wrong impression about size'n'all, Manitoba deer are of some very considerable size and require a 50 BMG or something somewhat slightly smaller to knock'em down dead with a one shot kill.:p Take care and happy hunting in your area!, my friend;)

We had two guys go out and got all there deer with a axe.
It started as a bet but after the fist guy got one he challenge the other and it went on from there I think thy got 19
If a axe works any rifle will do

an axe is piss poor for hunting deer, now if one uses a hatchet, like the Comanche Indians did, then you're talk'en meat in the freezer!

Who knows more about hunting blacktail deer then us guys living on Haida Gwaii we kill more deer in one year then most will in there life time
it take skill to hunt deer with a axe never heard of any one getting one with a hatchet lol
Rifle and caliber has more to do with what is sitting in the ammo shelf at the Co-op haahaa

I will admit that I don't know much about other species of deer .or hunting on the mainland but I know a thing or two about hunting Black tail deer
I know better hunters then myself, but I do hold my own when it comes to filling my freezer and my family's freezers.

Hunting the dog size deer is fun and addictive

Two mulie does shot on our property this year with .223's.

I shot one, the other was shot by a young lady with some shoulder issues making her recoil sensitive.

Mine took a shot in the ribs and took two not fast steps before plowing in on her nose.
Penetration was in through the rib, destroyed the lungs, took the top off the heart, exit out the offside ribs, and 30 of 50 grains of the Winchester bulk bag bullet were found against the front leg bone on the far side of the deer.

The young lady's doe flopped, rib entry again, lungs trashed, heart was chopped up to not be worth saving. Factory 55 grain soft point ammo.

Don't shoot them in the bum. I like to aim just aft of the point of the front 'elbow', and 1/3-1/2 up, or aim at that spot roughly, on the far side for a quartering away shot.
I gave up shooting at running deer a long time ago.
Have fun.

Cheers

(Deer over here don't get any bigger than 120 lbs? I find this out now....what a drag )
Over here you are allowed 10 deer on Haida Gwaii that's up to 1200 lb and plenty of fun filling the freezer

You can totally drop a small to mid size deer with a .223 and a good bullet, not arguing that at all.

This year I was walking with my buddies kid, right before dark, trying to get him his first deer as youth doe was open and we saw a mommy and 2 big griz cubs. I was carrying a 6.5x55 with 140 partitions in the 2700 range and he had a '06 with 150gr sst's.

I quickly replaced the shell I stripped out of the mag of my tikka t3 and rested against a fence post beside me. I told him to get his rifle off safe and ready and keep his finger off the trigger.

The bears watched us for a minute and then wandered off. Perfect. We had a nervous 15 minute wait for the truck to come back.

Reason right there not to carry a .223 deer hunting. I wished I was carrying my 45/70. I load 480 hard cast to 1700, what I actually got my deer with this year at 90 yards open sights.

That's beauty, I got a deer by dropping from an apple tree & breaking it's neck with a bayonet when I was
16 and other than a few hoof dents, I had meat in the freezer.

I would like to go back to Haida Gwaii to do some deer pokin'. Haven't been there since '74 when I went
with some buddies to hunt/party. No bag limit in them days & we filled a pickup truck box in one day of hunting.
Friggin' deer were everywhere. Gave most all of the meat to the locals, but had a great time. My rifle was my
.22 Cooey single shot which I still have. I got six & my amigos did the rest.

If you're still up to the armpits in deer, it would be good to try spear hunting the buggers.:)
The big spear is my trail spear for defence against bear, cougars or idiots. The shorter one is for
finishing halibut before draggin' them into the boat.

Just to throw another personal experience in. My girlfriends father shoots a Sako .222, from the 60's, with about 10,000 rounds through the thing (Can't believe the thing still shoots) This year, he lent the rifle to a close friend who lived north of us here in Caledon, and he and a friend filled both their buck tags with the rifle. The first was a smaller buck, who he was not worried about ruining the front cape. He shot it in the neck at around 90 yards, and it dropped in its tracks, dead as a doornail. The second buck just won the Standard Antlered Buck Draw for 2013, and scored 210 Points when scored in his area. The buck was massive, and weighed around 260lbs. He shot the buck just behind the front shoulder, and hit it through one lung and broke the shoulder on the far side. The buck ran around 40 yards and dropped in his tracks as well.

I would have to say that, the most important thing is to choose the correct ammo and make great shot placement. Vital shots are very important, or a neck shot if you feel comfortable enough doing that. Shooting a high expansion bullet, which in this case was a 50 Grain Winchester Pointed Soft Point bullet, causes a great deal of damage and opens up a large wound on the far side of the shot. Great blood trail, and terrific damage within the good ol' boiler room. Hope this helps, just throwing in my .02!
