Hunting Deer With A .223?

i have hunted deer with a 22lr wen i was younger and dint know better worked grate out to 25 yards
I hunted deer out to 65 yards with 22 hornet all 22 are good fore one shot kills but forget about taking long shots
with a 22 there are only two shots to make neck and head you will be surprise at how well a precise shot to the juggler and vertebra will drop them
its a lot of work hunting deer with a 22 my self I do not have the time to hunt with my hornet so i hunt with 260 rem now

260, good choice.
Don't shoot the neck, you will be missing out on something finer than pulled pork! Cut the neck in slow cooker size lengths, pour in beef broth and all you favorite flavors, put in slow cooker for 10 hrs and walla, you have some mighty awesome pull apart meat, pulls right off the bones.

260 is in a rugger compact I seen other guys fighting to get ther rifle out of the truck ,just to long.
Most times I can get two shots off before there there out of the truck and ready to shoot.
I think shorter the rifle the better wen hunting rifles

I will try coocking the neck in the slow cocker next fall
Wen the rut is on I remove the neck right along with the stink pads on the bucks makes the meat tast better

.223 kills deer yup good choice cheap to feed, does the job. head shots, i agree neck meat is too good to shoot up, i like to eat heart and i don't like meat all shot to ####. though you gotta be fussy on which shots to take. usually if you're patient you get the shot you want. I agree, it takes a bit more discipline to hunt with a small rifle. i like to shoot surgically when hunting. clean meat. until i start to want to eat brains then i dunno what i'll do. use a bow? i frigging hope not, that seems tedious.

Great choice in a rifle and caliber seein' as you have some really fat black bears up there. If i lived in the land of the eagle & raven, then I would most likely use my .375 Winchester 94 for most all hunting, using cast boolits of course.:)

And yes, neck meat is great when slow cooked, even bear.;)

.223 for Blacktail ....witht he best bullet available and knowing your gun and able to shoot ...whats not to like?
I know of a few guys who shoot .240 Wby, .218 Bee and that 6mm Br at Fallow Deer on Sydney ?island and they have great success
in their activities.
Become one with your gun and get out there and go hunting.( well maybe next deer season ) or maybe try for a Lynx or Bobcat while becoming one with your choice in firearm.
Tight Groups,
Rob

Sidney Island was great to hunt in the early 80's. First deer there was a 125 lb. dressed out blacktail I took
using a Savage 99 in .375 Win. The next hunt, I got an 80 lb. spike fallow deer using a Marlin in 30-30.
Fallow make great pepperoni.:)

So... The deer could have run three miles and "dropped in his tracks" also??? I guess we all "drop in our tracks" eventually...

Eventually yes, everything dies. Often times large caliber rifles and bows do the same things, based on poor shooting, Poor sight set up, or poor shot placement. Overall, I think that any rifle caliber can do the job, regardless of what you shoot (Within reason). We can't forget that when the .22LR came out, and ever since, there have been hundreds if not thousands of recorded kills of whitetail deer. So while that may not be great practise, it is entirely possible. I am not saying everything you shoot will die like ours did, I am simply giving my experience and answering the original threads question. I know for a fact through its years, that .222 has killed probably more than 500 white tail deer since the 60's when he bought it at 12 years old. And we got the mounts to prove it here too

The gun is an awesome shooter, and usually takes about 50 coyotes every year! Honestly love shooting it, although it may be the worst condition sako known to man. He is a terrific shooter and a great guy, but will never touch his firearms to clean. I took apart his 7600 the other day in .30-06 and have never seen so much gunk in a rifle before!

does the Ruger Compact have the DM? If so, right on! I do love my lil Browning Micro with the DM for road hunting:p

Okay, I never get drawn for deer up here, but I'll have to save a slab of moose neck and give his a try. Sounds too good to not give it a go. Thanks!

I have no idea what a DM is? Haahaa
My Rugger compact feels like I am packing a 22 LR with the shorter barrel the rifle is a pleasure to carry in the bush.
The only thing I don't like is it can be hard to find ammo fore the 260 sometimes

DM = Detachable Magazine

.260 is a far better choice than .223... JS.

Ever kill deer with an axe, or a hatchet?

:D

R.

no, not me personally, but I heard many a story about my wife's great great grandfather Chief Crazy Horse and how he kept the family fed with his throwing hatchet. Of coarse they called it a tomahawk back in the early days. Apparently, he could split the skull almost in two out to 30 some yards and he never ever lost a hatchet.
