Maybe he knows how to shoot\pattern his gun and judge distance.............
i could swear i remember reading somewhere in the manitoba reg's that for a shotgun, slugs were mandatory for deer, no buckshot of any size was allowed
but my mind has failed me before, so i'd better check.

I'm no grey-bearded hunter, but from what I've seen from practicing with my 12 gauge - the only way I'd use buckshot is if I needed to make a shot within within 200-400 yds of a dwelling (NB hunter regs).

Yup. Leave the buckshot at home, use slugs instead. With slugs you either have a 1/2" hole in the deer or a miss.....seen too many deer crippled up with a leg half-rotten because of a 000 pellet.
Set up a standard sheet of paper at 30 yards (good representation of the kill zone of a deer) and shoot it with the buckshot.....you'll see why slugs are a MUCH better choice.

Large shot does better with less choke than more because full choke distorts the shape of the shot and then you have more flyers. It's best to pattern test to make sure.
Buck shot inside 30 yards is paralyzing. You will likely need a close-in kill shot after it's down.
I'd only use buckshot on deer that like to hide like rabbits. That means real close and in the thick of it where nothing else is usefull.

In BC, shotguns with slugs are not allowed in shotgun only areas. You might find that a cylinder choke might give a better pattern by not distorting the shot as much but you need to pattern the gun with both. Might also want to try loading your own shells and filling the spaces between the pellets with Crisco for a tighter pattern.

Killed plenty of deer over 20 years with 00 Buck. Never lost one, great for under 40 yards and/or when they are running.
Ive switched to slugs with rifled barrel as we longer do big drives.
I'd try both barrels. We always used the old 30 inch barrel with full chokes.

Do yourself a favour and pattern it! My self I wouldn't bother with buckshot at all.
Never had any gun that was even remotley consistent with it. If the game shows up at 75 yards you still have a good chance with slugs buckshot won't make it and you will be tempted to try anyway.

They call it buckshot for a reason. It will definitely kill deer. Pattern your gun and use whatever patterns the tightest to get the most pellets on target. 000 buck hits with authority. I have killed many with 00 buck. Limit your range to 30 yards or so and you will be surprized what it will do.
in bc, shotgun only areas it cannot be a single projectile. so your forced to use shot. my last deer was at 35yards, all i could see was its head and neck. so i put the bead on its upper neck and it dropped on the spot. the shock was so bad i had meat damage into both shoulders.
