Hey all, Ive been looking around the web with the intention of getting a bird dog soon, and I was wondering if any of you had any breeders you would reccommend. I know that there are a lot of official certifications out there, but I honestly trust 'on-the-ground' feedback over any CKC designations a breeder may have. All those show dog posing pictures tell me nothing about how good of a companion and hunter a dog can be, and ,frankly, weird me out a little.

I'm primarily interested in American Brittany's, as I grew up with the breed as pets and bird dogs. The dogs my old man had were absolutely great, but the breeder we got them from, Hughie Slaney in Newfoundland, seems to be out of the business. If I could, I'd love to see if I can unearth that same 'line' but I'm not sure whether that's feasible. In the absence of that, does anyone have any experience with any other Brittany breeders in Newfoundland, or anywhere else in Canada? Are the folks out at Glaranik Kennels in Eastport legit? They only have a facebook page for contact, which is a bit of a red flag for me, but they may well be decent.

Anyway, thanks for your time and any information you may have. I'd like to put it out there that I'm open to information about breeders of English Setters and German Shorthaired Pointers as well, though I have very little experience with the GSP's.

I know a guy who trains bird dogs (English Setters mostly I believe) and used to run the circuits for Canada and the US. I believe he also breeds his male (English Setter) with females from certified breeders. He'd have on the ground experience and probably could recommend where to look. I can ask him if I can give you his info if you're interested, he'd mostly deal with English Setters, his licence plate is ESETTER lol

My Britt came from Ataboy Kennels in Ontario, however I've just learned that they don't have any upcoming litters and maybe getting out of breeding. So sorry that I'm not much help, but I can tell you that I am impressed with my Britt from there and would have gone there again. Good luck in your search and post up your results!

For a Brittany look up Amigo Kennels (out of Didsbury, AB) and give Kim/Tom a call, I don't think they have any litters planned but Kim is the President of the Brittany Club of Canada and both are good friends of mine. They pretty much know every registered pointing dog breeder in Canada and would have a pretty good idea of who's having litters from Ontatio-BC. I know quite a few breeders here on the west coast and I know some just had litters that were all spoken for. You can also look up the Brittany Club of Canada Website and they have a list of breeders on there.

If you're wanting Info on GSP's then I know a few breeders too, check out Firepoint Kennels and Windrip Kennels and Coveypoint German shorthair pointer (i think Devin only has a facebook page) in Alberta. Their contact info is on the GSP club of canada website. (Amigo Kennels would probably be able to give you info on who's having GSP litters out this way as well.) Also check out Ghost Hunter Creek Weimaraners on FB. Jason is a friend of mine too and breeds beautiful dogs.

If you want any more info PM me.

I've got all my Britts here ht tp://kinwashklybrittanys.com/ , Leslie ships dogs all over North America and has an excellent reputation in both trial and hunting circles. She is not a volume breeder and you must reserve a dog from a litter to get one. Britts are great family dogs as well as hunters, my godsons come over to play with the "boys" from time to time and happy chaos ensues.

Agreed all Leslie's dogs are pretty amazing dogs and she has them as far out as at least Hawaii. *Show and just about every competition her dogs do amazing at.

Try Ring Neck kennels in Strathmore Alberta.

Maunty there is supposed to be a fantastic trainer as well.

We are taking our Fox Red Lab for training in August.

He did a demonstration for us of one of his "students" who had been in training for only two weeks and I was incredibly impressed.

got my Hunter from them as well, sad to hear they are getting out
i've posted a vid of Hunter fetching ball at 8weeks old, on youtube, couple of days after getting him from the breeders

I got my Britt from Downwind, in Vienna, ON. Mary-Lou and Lorne Fitch breed for the walking hunter, not the show ring. Lou knows his double guns as well, great people. Mine is a great pointer, game farm or wild. Ugo at Uplander trained me, and showed my dog a few things as well, an excellent trainer if you are looking. Good luck!

We also got ours, last year, from Downwind in ON. Due to health reasons on my part I have not been able to get him out in the field as such but the intent from the start was more pet then hunter. Absolutely awesome dog and fantastic with our kids, ages 8 and 3, and good around the house. Also very intelligent but that is referencing him to our last dog which was a grey hound so he may be the dumbest Brittany ever but compared to the greyhound he is Einstein.
