Hunting Dogs!!! Post your pics & stories!!!

Don't force them to swim let them learn to love to swim. One of our black labs is afraid of water due to actions from a previous owner. Remington is her name.
Yep, i just bring her to the water, splash in up to my ankles and she pushes a bumper around in the shallows. We're in no rush at all - obviously she won't be hunting this fall.

Dreamwaters, it looks like I jumped the gun a bit. I'll be getting a yellow, and the mom looks just like yours. The pup was born this morning.

Congrats Orthoboy - get lots of sleep now! You've got two months to get ready and to start thinking about what you will want from pup, and how you plan to get there. I can honestly say that owning a gun dog changed my perspective on hunting forever - I went from a halfhearted weekend warrior who bought a deer tag mostly to go and walk around in the woods with his buddies making too much noise, to a total fanatic (my marriage barely survived at first - lol!). Interesting, the passion that getting a gun dog brought to me for bird hunting has since carried over into my big game hunting now as well. Enjoy!

Our first canoe ride this morning...
First, I tossed a handful of kibble in the canoe. True to the lab stomach, Pearl scrambled around gobbling it up, and didn't care about rocking the boat!

So we headed out for a nice paddle, and she settled right into it! It felt so good to be out in the canoe with a dog aboard once again. I've barely been on the water this season after losing Ruby. The first of many adventures!

Wanted to let all dog owners know about this infection. One of our pups at 4 months died very suddenly this week from blasto. It was a young couples first dog , his name was Cooper

On a more positive note we have a black lab and chocolate lab bred and we should have pups in 8 to 9 weeks .

Sorry to hear that - they must be shattered about it. :-(

Thanks for posting. It sounds like something very difficult for lab owners to avoid, given the breed's enthusiasm for water. Good to know what some of the symptoms are though, so that it can be suggested to a vet as something to look into.

My condolences to Cooper's owners.

Blasto sucks the big one. My 10 yr old black lab "Lex" succumbed to this horrible disease a couple of years ago. Haven't had the heart to replace him yet.

Pearl's first trip to the ocean yesterday. We went down to Lunenburg and enjoyed a nice evening walk on the beach.

A quick taste of salt - yuk!

And then it was time to burn off some puppy energy!

GSP - Jake

I remember reading a kids books about dogs and they had a picture of a german shorthaired pointer. it also said that they are the best all around do it all dog there is (purly opinion I am sure) It stuck with me and I ended up with this guy. Have had quite a few adventures. Watching dogs work and seeing the drive they have is simply amazing. I have gone on hunts and just worked the dog and never felt I missed anything by not carrying a gun. Here are a few pics.

The best part of getting back from a few days of hunting, he sleeps for 3 days and doesn't move, other then to eat, drink or go outside. But I would imagine that if we put on 5-15 miles a day of walking he easily does triple that. I will hopefully be getting the garmin tracking collar this year and will hopefully be able to see what is actual speed and distance is.

Nice dog , if he's a normal bird dog he'd cut himself on a long weekend 2 hours from the nearest vet so it can cost lots 0f $$$ to treat him. :) Took my boys out for a run this AM and both Chip ( my 7 year old) and Bug my 31\2 month old found some birds.

I love these high energy dog's, though not as versatile for waterfowl, they are an excellent upland dog and a great family pet. I have one more "on order" hopefully in May if there is a male in the litter. I'm picking up some birds on the long weekend to do a bit of training with Chip and his buddy Riley.

Hey hunter5425 I'd love to know where you get your brittany spaniels from? I'm on the look out for a good upland hunting companion!
