Yes it is, but increasingly it's dying. Why? It's an expensive way to hunt anymore, (food bills, vet bills, fuel hunting for lost dogs) and stand hunters tend to get bigger and more deer. Still, it is by far the most exciting hunting for deer there is. As you know, I ran my own dogs years ago. The sound of the chase, the companionship of the dogs are hard to beat. Today, many consider it unsporting, as they sit over their bait piles. You need to try it, to really understand just how sporting it is, and how hard it is too. Deer were rarely shot on the run, most were walking, or even standing. There are tricks to stop a running deer, and they work most of the time. We hunted with Beagles. They didn't push the deer hard, and chases were shorter.

Thanks .... My dad used to run coon dogs in Fergus area, Wellington County. Mostly walkers. He used them for deer as well. I never got to do that with him which I would have loved doing.

Story from my old beagle.

Hounds have a one track mind which has absolutely nothing to do with what you want.

We had beagles, bassets and a blood hound on the farm. The blood hound would disappear for a couple days at a time (probably running deer) and finally come home half starved and exhausted. Ranger was a good name for him.

this is my 125 pound english chocolate lab named Moose. I've never been much about waterfowl , hunter , but I do like my grouse hunting. He's more of a shed hunting dog than a bird dog. Probably my fault. I should have got him trained for geese because as I get older , I think that's something I'd like to pursue.

I'm 220 pounds and almost 6 feet tall. And he can grab onto my waistband and swim with me upstream the Pembina river. I must be a crappy swimmer as every time I go into the creek , he thinks i'm drowning and needs to save me.

I asked for the biggest pup in the litter.When I got him and I sure did get just that. If\nHe is sitting with his bum on the floor he can put his chin on top of the kitchen table with no effort

Here's my Elkhound Odin. He's my sharp shooter. He also alerts me to nearby deer without barking. My eyes, ears and nose when walking and let's me sense through the fog.

Little Kelpie that helps out the old man in the fall. He is good on grouse as a flusher retriever. Deadly on squirrel if that was a thing here. Has popped up Bobcat and Racoon. Done a little bit of blood trailing but none have been much of a challenge.

We run coyotes with hounds in the winter and I started bringing her once in a while this year just for ####s and giggles.

She's been doing good, stays right by me, spots them before I do most times and doesn't move or give chase until I fire and miss the first shot unless they're really close or really far in which case she'll just sit tight. If I miss the first shot and they're 50 to 100 yards out she'll take off after them and stop 50 yards away from me and just watch them. She kind of looks like a coyote a bit and that seems to cause them some confusion and makes them slow down or stop to get a good look at her which allows me to drop them if I missed the first time.

She's hell on squirrels in the fall too, tree rats are her real passion.

I lost my partner, "Lexie" last year... haven't had the heart to look for another Springer pup until now... just sent in a deposit with a local breeder that has a crossover bloodline with Lexie... will be back training and flushing birds soon.

Here is my silver lab, Earl. He is an amazing hunter. My grandfather used to field trial labs, so I know the time and effort required for a great dog. How I lucked out with this guy, I’ll never know. A much better hunter and family dog than I deserve. I believe you get one amazing dog in your lifetime. This is mine.

I am surprised that I haven't put this one up yet.
This is myself with Allie , Silverado's best friend for many years .
This was when the limit was ten per hunter.
The danged dog was putting up ruffies right at the truck before we even hot the guns out! LOL
This was along a road owned by a Petro Can With an extremely wide shoulder .
The weeds were up to over 5 ' high, with thick clover and rose hips and raspberries underneath .
The birds had to flush straight up up a bit before they could head for the trees .
Eventually the oil company sprayed the shoulder because too many trucks were getting into wrecks with moose and deer.
The vegetation is just coming back now .
It's been the better part of 15 years or more I think since this was taken.
