Older gent I chum with has asked for info on where to locate a hunting dog breeder.
Curious to know for those on here that have some preferred breeders that they would recommend.
Jay?
Lou?

RickeeLeTete?

I've mentioned he may wish to find a partner with a bit more hair than a GSP.

Cheers

Your buddy will not find a better dog than a Drathar for the country you guys roam.
From a family dog to a retriever to a pointer to a dog that will give a bear a hard time .
Who is the mod with Noss a very stubborn who hs a thing for porkie pines ;)
But, I think it would be a test to see who is going to control who, the German or the Italian ;)

For a pointer he should check out NAVDA. All about pointers and some good breeds in it who cares about breading good dogs.
I had a Large Munsterlander for almost 16 years. He was an excellent dog and still miss him.

I have hunted over many dogs, and I chose a Drahthaar. Into our fifth hunting season, and zero regrets. My pup came from Vom Slaney Vale.

Kinwashkly kennels is where I have got all my Britts from and have been more than satisfied. Lesley's dogs are known for good temperment, health , and hunting drive. She is known in the field trial circles as well.

Gordon Setter for the win. Extraordinary hunters. They know what you're thinking every step of the hunt. My Maggie does that iconic point to a bird behind her, with a twisted spine/neck. She would never let you think she missed a ptarmigan. Protect your grandkids and your property with her life!

I'm biased but if you have the time to train them and treat them right a Chesapeake would be my choice.
Have seen them going and eager when others were tired, cold, wet or they were caught up in their hunting collar gizmos fetching for air.
There is a good breeder down in Chilliwack and I've had a litter this spring. But they are all gone to good homes and we plan not to have any till spring 2022.

The answer your buddy is looking for Kamlooky is: Drahthaar

When it comes to a versatile hunting dog, I am not sure there are many other breeds that compare. Just have a look at the breeding system they have in place.

And like any high energy breed, they need regular daily exercise. Our pup Egon is almost 5 months old & he gets TWO 1 hour off leash walks per day. The result is a well behaved pup around the house.

If not a GSP, Drahthaar would be my second choice.

Agreed, with one added comment: "Deutsch Kurzhaar". (GSP bred to the same breed standard as the Drahthaar)

Our pup Egon's motherline is Deutsch Kurzhaar. 4 breeds were used to develop the Drahthaar: Griffon, Pudelpointer, Deutsch Kurzhaar and Stichelhaar. Hence the Germans pointing back to the motherline.

Nos, the Drahthaar we just lost, came from a Pudelpointer motherline.

Cheers

Truly sorry to hear of this news.
No’s was such a character with his love of porcupines...not so much love ;)
Till you two meet again , No’s will be a legend to those who knew of his character and of the breed he represents.
Thanks for sharing Jay.

Thanks guys, the pm's & posts like this help. Not easy losing a dog & Nos was a hell of a dog! Not to derail the thread, but this is the first time we have bridged the gap between dogs with a pup... Egon is distracting us from the reality that Nos's time with us has past. In the future, I think we will do the same again. It's much easier to have a pup to keep you going when the old dog passes.

In appreciation.
Jay

The good...
