Just wondering what people think about how the Province they hunt in has the draw system set up?
I live in Alberta it’s pretty predictable to 1or 2 yrs now that they have the priority system
Before it not so much I knew guys that had received tags multiple yrs in a row while others had gone yrs with out getting one

In Alberta you put in for a wmu(wildlife management zone) if you don’t get drawn you get 1 priority point , so the going into the next yr (season) you put in again not drawn again you get a second point , it goes on until you hit the magic number of points then you start over
Is that the way Ontario’s system works?

The nice thing about Alberta, you can simply defer the draw, build up priority points and submit for the draw when it is convenient to you, or keep applying and build up your points till you are drawn. It makes it easier to plan hunts for future years, no lottery nonsense.

I stopped participating in the BC draw system this year.
Has become more of a bother than a benefit so I don't see the point in wasting time on it as it doesn't affect my freezer filling one way or the other.

mate has been waiting for 14yrs for bull elk in one particular zone here in sask
he hasnt even made it the new priority pool yet

i am waiting to see the elk tag numbers this year as the past 3 years they dropped
the tag numbers down and yet the herds increased and the damaged continued

Priority system in Manitoba; first time applicant starts at level 8 and drops a level with every year you don't get drawn, when you get drawn you go to level 10 for the next year. Even if you don't put in an application you drop a level which is nice. Biggest issue here, it's all still a manual application system nothing online except the application form.

I should add our draw system is only for "Big Game" Moose, Elk; no draw for deer.

I really like Alberta's system and wish NB add the defer option. It would make planning hunting trips much easier to predict. I don't want to plan and organize a hunt in another province only to find out in July I have an NB moose tag.

The deer draw in Ont is just for antlerless tags - you can buy a antlered tag over the counter.

The Moose draw is a mess. There are no priority points. It used to be 2 pools, A&B. First thing to remember is moose (and deer) hunting is party hunting meaning anyone in the party can shoot as many animals as the party has tags for.
GENERALLY speaking, it used to be that each WMU had guaranteed party size tags, meaning if your party met the requirement your party was allotted a tag (either cow or bull)
Some remote areas had small party size (2) other populated areas had party size 15.
Now some areas have not guaranteed party size - meaning a group of 15 guys may not get a tag....
GENERALLY most pool A groups would get some kind of tag. The next year the group would be in pool B meaning they would not get a tag unless all pool A groups got on and there were tags left over....generally speaking. All pool B guys would be in pool A the next year.

There were lots of issues with the system.....to name a one:
Guys manipulated the group size by adding in wives and girlfriends and grampas etc who had no intention of hunting, but bought a license so the group was big enough and got a tag. If the wife got the tag she could transfer it to another person in the group. (that never should have been allowed IMO)

Now it is a total mess. Plus there are not a lot of moose to hunt anyway.
It could easily be better managed. BUT it's not.

I have given up on ever going moose hunting again in Ont

Only the group member holding the tag would be in pool 2. Everybody else in the group remains in pool 1.

If someone in the group is successful in the draw, the tag is automatically assigned to the group member who has applied every year and been the longest without receiving a tag; remaining members of the group are then removed from the draw (these members will be in Pool 1 for next year).

Moose draw in Nova Scotia is a joke and 30 years behind what other province do
6 in our group of guys applying like 34 years and never a tag and others on their 5th tag
Cheers

i paid for the doe draw in ontario 5 years, have received 1 tag, this year will be my 6th time applying. Find out in a few weeks if i was successful.

Been drawn for moose here in Sask 2 times in the last 6 years, but I put in for the maximum amount of zones each and every year. Have to be willing to travel and get permission if you want to get drawn more frequently.

Technically you don’t pay for the draw. You buy an antlered tag and then apply for the antlerless amendment to it.

Whereas the WMU I hunt in SWO doesn’t ever fill the allocated tag quota for antlerless. You apply, you get one.

Same here. Only once in the last 30 years has it dropped below 100%. It was about 5 years ago and there was a noticeable increase in applicants to the area and it dropped to 96% and one hunting buddy was lucky enough to be denied.

The moose hunt is a mess. Stopped applying about 10 years ago. But since brother bought property we started applying again last year. Slim chance of drawing an adult tag but if we ever do we will go but not interested in going just for calf. The area has steadily added a few more tags each of the past few years and getting moose pics on the trail cams so now just need a bit of luck.

In many Alberta WMU zones, such as 504 where I do most of my hunting I just buy my OTC general Whitetail tag, good for buck or doe and then buy my OTC supplemental doe tag. No draws required. In some zones you can get two supplemental doe tags, in others none. Our system works well,I get my bull moose every three years like clockwork, or I can defer it to when it is convenient for me. It is a good system and fair for everybody, unlike a lottery.

Should add in NB deer are antlered only for most of the province, a handful of Northern zones are closed to hunting deer. You are, as a general rule, allowed a single deer even if you win the antlerless draw it is for a single management zone.
Bear is over the counter and you can take 2 a year, Only one a day though if I remember correctly. I have never wanted process more than one bear at a time so I may be miss remembering based on my personal bias.
