We are apparently in for a snowstorm here in MB this weekend. I am curious as to your thoughts on hunting during the storm. I want to take advantage of the free weekend to try and bag a deer with my muzzleloader before general rifle starts and the hunting pressure increases and pushes everything out of my usual spots. Any advice, opinions, or tips would be appreciated.

Hunting during a snowstorm can turn out really well as the fresh snow muffles sound and can help keep the scent down, stick to coves or clearings the deer frequent as i have noticed they are a bit more nervous in a storm and will flee at the sound of brush cracking.

Good luck hunting!

Do you suppose rattling would help draw out a big fella? Or is feeding and shelter the main priorities during stormy weather?

During a snowstorm I would more concentrate near there food source. They may not be as active during the day so keep an eye under trees ect

I'd say your best bet is to slowly walk down ATV/bush trails, etc. and stop every now and then to look around. Seeing as this is the first major snowfall of the year, my experience has been that there'll be little to no movement, especially if the wind picks up.

during a snow fall is the best time I find to walk up on them as the noise is less and there is movement all around with the flakes so they tend to hang around longer, in most cases long enough to get a shot.

I have shot many moose in the middle of a snowstorm , as well as have a deer come straight at my truck once ..it was a real nice buck..it got away
Hunting in the snowfall i think triggers them to get eating;)

Love hunting in the snow! I prefer to push the timber on snowy days being careful about the wind. You know that any tracks you see are hot and deer stand out well in the snow and not as spooked in the timber.

I have good luck walking slowly through the bush in some snow storms, Came up on some good deer feeding , With the wind noise and the snow falling , it is eaiser to sneak up on them, Lots of time there are less hunter out because of the storm, means less hunting pressure , deer not as scared,

Snow storms are great for still hunting in heavy cover. The wind usually covers the noise and the powder/snow makes walking almost silent. They hold up and you can walk right up on moose, deer or even elk.
