It was my turn today, and seeing as Im not posting stories over on the Aussie forum, its your Lucky Easter CGNers!
not too many illustrations for this but it started off yesterday and i snuck into the mountain range which holds some fallow deer, it started pissen down rain before dark so i flicked a message to a young fella, whos father has a bush cabin or Hut as we call them down here, the Hut was nearby about 4k as a crow flies from where i was at the time.. i was just hoping for the Verandah but instead was offered where the Key was hiding! You beauty! - could be a mistake on their behalf- may move in there over winter HA HA!
Regardless i was in a comfy hut in y swag for the night, i didnt hear any Grunting bucks but i was in a fairly good area for it- or so i thought.
that morning i had ambitions to cut across the rim of a ridge and set of gulleys but i tell you what, my legs were cooked from the past week of hunting that i just needed to Sleep in! an with that i turned off the alarm and back to snooze.......... got up breifly, but went back to sleep again. i was stuffed!
that midday i went for a walk around where i intended, spooking a Fallow doe and fawn near the hut and seeing only a Wombat on the hllside.
a msg popped up from the young fella down the hill , He was keen to show me a new motorbike jump and if i had my minibike (klx110) to pop down.... Well that was enough for me.. BRaaaaap away the Afternoon... to return up the track to the hut for another night - self invited- so rude
this time tonight I was goin to bed early and up vrack of dawn to beat the sparrows fartin an spooking any deer....
the problem though, was i just didnt get to bloody sleep!!!!!
tossed and turned like you would not believe, then at midnight i packed up my gear, loaded my truck and bumped along the track to my hunting spot for the day, which is a well known haunt of mine practically half way down the other end of the range ha ha- driving straight it woud take maybe half an hour.... not too far.
i decided i would drive a bit on the ridges and pull up, have a cup of tea a smoke and a listen, then move on a little further - i did this in several places up until 5am when i headed back a little and chose a spot to drop down on, almost as soon as i pulled up a buck was grunting- assumed to be one from earlier i heard-
i didnt stuff around too much, i wanted to catch him on the hill knob he was on, so i didnt have to drop down too much altitude... my legs were fresher but not fresh.
it was all before camera light so a bit spewing but sometimes thats hunting, more to it than videos- he was courting a few Does back an forth, as they fed slowly back to bushline,
i popped over a small crest above them in the bushline and studied them in binos to find the buck, in the dim light i seen a good lookin Palm antler but not as strong on the other side from initial looks, i decided that was me for the Rut, took aim with the A bolt and kaboom.. Dropped him with a high shoulder shot and placed a finisher in him to seal that deal.
Some photos , Im happy with how it all went and the weeks hunting , i wont 'stop' but il chill for a few days and now only shoot if its Clearly 2 years older or more than these Bucks ive shown you photos of..... They needa get a bit bigger.
This was as big as we sorta found, without looking too hard, I did but the other lads just did a morning here or there.
