Was out groundhog hunting yesterday (southern ontario)and although it was sunny it was windy too. For some reason the hogs would only have their heads up out of their holes most of the time and would be quicker than usual to go in. Is it because they don't hear as well with the wind up and they are extra cautious or was is just a strange day? I generally shoot in the 150 to 300 yard range so I don't think I am spooking them. Any thoughts ?

Wind chill. As daft as it sounds. Ground hog fur(hair?) is very thin and they don't like the cold.
"...shoot in the 150 to 300 yard..." Stalk 'em on windy days. Less affect on the bullet too.

Never hunted ground hogs but if they are anything like our western gophers or prairie dogs to the south then they should hate wind. Shooting at distances past 150 yards in windy conditions is just this side of futile as well.
