Hunting grouse 22lr or 410?

Ya I deviated from the mastiffs. Picked up this confused lil minion. Her father was a bluetick coonhound and the mother was a wirehaired German pointer. Sometimes she points other times she full out charges with her mouth open on full attack. When my daughter goes in the school this pup releases her inner coon hound vocals. She's been visiting the gun clubs and shows no care about the sound of gun shots. She's only 9.5 weeks old but I'm hoping to get her out hunting this year. Won't be grouse but late season squirrel and rabbit and hopefully dove
I think her and a double gun should do just fine

Neither.
20ga #6 is about ideal.
Also, cleaning a couple pellets out of the meat is not so big a deal as people make it. I'm just happy I got some birds at all.

In northern Ontario, grouse are usually easy to hunt with a .22. I like a challenge, so I hunt with a single shot loaded with .22 shorts. Nice and quiet!

I used 22, 12 and 410 over the years. This year l tried a 410 Stevens 301 with the turkey choke and a red dot, but after a short time removed red dot. l just used the iron sights that came with the gun. (front bead and scope rail). Best gun for head shots ever. I also made my own hand reloader to load 410, makes for a cheaper shooting shotgun.

When hunting remote, I pack along a Lil Badger .22... in this year's moose camp, we kept the pot full of grouse with the little gun and CCI Quiets.20241018_114850.jpg

I've used a .22/20ga Savage 24H-DL since about 1967. Only tried a headshot once, nearly missed. Took the very top of its head off. I use solid shorts, long, or mostly long rifle. Shot lots of Prairie Chickens in stubble at a goodly distance.

Nice, I have to get me one of those. It drives me crazy every time I see a grouse and all I have is a 308.

It is handy... folds and fits in my day pack, and the CCI Quiets don't disturb much. I have a Vortex Crossfire Red Dot mounted, zeroed at 25 yards, it hits one inch low at 10 yards, so on close ones, I aim a smidgen above the head, never missed one all fall.
