having trouble getting out somewhere i know is not private land (im probably over cautious about it not being familiar with there being so much private land) itching to get out for some coyote or possible small game near Ottawa. im itching to get out. i dont want some weekend long hunting trip with lodging and meals id just like to get out and try to get a coyote or something for a day or so. anyone know any guides who do this in the area? maybe a land owner who takes people out? or even a CGN member who would take a new Ontario resident out lol

Flat out uninformed guess but I suspect this will be difficult to find, I know here that sort of thing doesn’t exist near a city. Guides and outfitters generally work much further out from town, and on longer trips- I’m one for reference.

This said I think you’re best off putting in the time to try and make hunting friends, the usual ways are gun clubs or the like, social media groups. But I did a quick google and found some good looking options just across the line in NY for a pheasant preserve and such, that’d be wonderful and a day you never grow out of. I love a day of upland hunting more than anything, and would choose it over a bear hunt any day. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if you found a preserve with a coyote issue you could tack on, too.

Wish you luck and keep us posted

Thanks for the help. Only been here a few weeks and not used to not being out in this long lol. Starting to do more shooting soon and hopefully I'll find someone who can help out

Good luck, I think you’ll find the local gun club pretty painful. Generally it’s the classic social situation, you’ll awkwardly have to break into developed groups who will be keen to protect the information they’ve assembled and hard won on spots and so forth. It’ll be a slow road of making friends who will in turn be willing to help you out. Generally the hunting and spots will be very mediocre as well, if easy to break into the group.

The honest answer is if you have the intense urge to really do something, bust out of your comfort zone and just do it. Drive twelve hours if need be and learn up on YouTube, and give it a go. Ontario has a spring bear hunt again to my understanding and that could be an ideal start, with any small game on the side that may be open as possibilities. I’d get a second hand canoe, a good tent, fishing gear, and go live. That package works anywhere in this country.

Hunting by and large is best engaged in as a long game, a weekend makes it possible, but the real joys will come with week long trips and beyond. I’d personally aim for longer trips, less often, rather than trying to day trip. My hunting personally stagnated until I accepted that fact myself. I grew up on a large farm the family sold when I was a late teen, which completely turned hunting from a backyard activity on a whim to a sudden logistical challenge. Giving up on trying to hunt locally was a blessing to me, and brought the real adventures. And really, you’ll do better on your own if motivated, instead of spending years second fiddle in a group with marginal hunting areas.

I’d also be open in your case to a guided hunt in your own province, though cost is a factor there.

Track down Eastern Canadian Outfitters. They have two outfitting areas in the wilderness of Quebec, and have multiple private land areas in and around eastern Ontario, plus he lives in the capitol region. A quick search on social media will turn him up I am sure. Good luck!

Not necessarily your situation as you just moved somewhere new and I am understanding about your situation however lots of people would love to go out hunting, whether that be a weekend or a week but not many do. People at work hound me to take them out but I feel like that they wouldn't appreciate it the same if I just took them somewhere to harvest some game. It takes a lot of time and investment to find an area or spot to hunt. That's the most rewarding part I find though and getting some game is icing on the cake that you have made. With this time and investment I have put in I am personally very hesitant just to take someone out as I hunt public land and it has taken me years to find areas that produce. Put in the time and effort to find an area to hunt.

It's great to see both of you guys.... Was a great experience that culminated from a bad experience and I learned a ton about a lot of things (including myself)....

OP, I'm about 50 minutes from you.... It's not a great time to hunt around here, except for yotes, but keep me in mind.... I have some land locally as well as some pretty good connections in the area for geese and other stuff....

I have a guided snow goose hunt planned now and an area to check out on my own

Unfortunately anything longer than a weekend trip isn't an option for me with work for a while.

If I could stay within an hour drive thatd be great but I wouldn't have a problem driving 2 hours I dont think. Really just getting a feel for how things work here so I'm not sure if that's reasonable or easy to find a place in that range

Nice man.... Mind if I ask which outfitter you chose?....

I usually run a day or two for snows with a buddy from CGN, he provides the gear (callers and dekes) and I provide the accomodations, steak dinner etc..... If it happens this year, I will keep you in mind....

For coyotes, look to head south towards my neck of the woods.... Glengarry is cornfield country and makes for some great yote hunting.... I'm pretty much done yote hunting for the year as I am about to fire up my syrup operation, but if I get the itch to head out before spring I will let you know....

The next thing to think about is the upcoming turkey season.... It's one of my favorite hunts and I own plenty of turkey land locally.... I could likely free up a weekend or two to act as your guide / caller for that.....

As for crown land, I would suggest you look north down highway 17..... Lots more (and better) there than here and you will find the bush much more like home than the bush here is.....

I also have a 150 acre camp with an additional 150 acre ofah lease and about 200 more acres of permission, that is a ways away for you, as it's north of Tweed Ontario....
