Whats everyone using for electronic hearing protection while hunting? Normally i never wear any but i may use my new 223 for coyotes and it wears a short barrel and brake. Id like a head set that still allows me to hear sounds in the woods but protect me from my brake

I had electronic ones short out on me the first time I used them in the rain. Just yesterday I picked up my custom-fitted molded ear plugs from NexGen. I got the full blockers with no vent. I hunt waterfowl alone preferably and need them for the range. They are not easy to put in so I'll stick with quick foam plugs for the occasional single big game shot.

But for lots of shooting at the range and waterfowling, with my current hearing damage and tinnitus, I need 'em bad. I'll wear muffs on top too.

I'm looking at MSA Supreme Pro X but they are a very pricey option!!!!

They are worth every penny. And they work well in all conditions. I have a pair and I prefer them to my Peltors. The sound quality is also good. At some point you get used to it and forget you have them on.

I use those ear plugs on a string. They're always available when I need them, but I can still hear when I don't.

I'd love a good high end pair of muffs but the budget won't allow for them yet. I've heard people use their Howard leights in the bush, no idea how well they'd hold up to weather though.

NexGen was great and easy to deal with. I went to the Burnaby place.

I paid $100 plus tax.

The only hitch was the manufacturer. I was told it would take 10 days from the fitting and it took two weeks. No big deal.

I wanted to get custom at Costco....but they don't sell them anymore.

How did you find the Nexgen experience? What price did you pay?

I use Howard Leights with a replacement gel pad when hunting or shooting in general, they’ve been great for the last 2-3 years I’ve owned them. I bought a 2 pack on amazon for around $79 so the wife can use a set or as a backup, I’m still on the same set of batteries in them. I dropped one set in the Shushwap river in the shallows two seasons ago getting into the boat, they totally submerged. I shook them off and they kept right on working, no issues in the rain this hunting season either. I’ve been very happy with them, with the upgraded gel pads I can wear them all day without any discomfort. When you’re still hunting you can turn up the ambient volume and hear a mouse fart.

well I'll be going against the trend. I don't use anything when big game hunting. But then its normally only 2 or 3 rounds the entire season.

range time I wear peletors, and sometime double up with plugs.

Hunting I don't usually wear protection.

But I do have a pair of short barreled rifles that have a painful, and probably dangerous, bark. For them I wear electronic muffs (Howard Leight). With the volume turned up they amplify sound higher than I could hear with bare ears. So they offer a hunting advantage.

Is anyone using electronic plugs? I do a lot of upland hunting which at times can have a fair bit of shooting (especially if I miss lol). I use a pair of muffs in the duck blind but walking 10 miles hunting pheasants with them on isn’t appealing. The electronic plugs seem to be appropriate but can be $1000 or more. I don’t mind paying that as you only get your hearing once but want to get the right pair that work in hunting conditions.

You’re lucky, I wish I could say the same. I’ve already got hearing loss from my teens and have some tinnitus as well, if I’m shooting a gun ear pro is mandatory for me. I shot a grouse once with my 12g and I hadn’t remembered to put my muffs on yet, man was that a bad idea. My ears were ringing more than normal for a good day or two, now as soon as I hit the dirt road my Howard Leights go on. Electronic ear pro are a blessing for me.

I only wear ear protection when shooting in the indoor range or from my clubs shooting shack. However a 16.5" braked barrel causes some ringing when i dont wear them. I was thinking the electronic ones would still allow me to hear wildlife in the bush while i wait

Any shooting without ear pro, even a 22lr is loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage. You might not notice it right away, but eventually it'll set in, and there is no way to get it back.

I got my hearing damage from power tools (electric impact guns, gas chop saws, skillsaws, grinders, ect) while working construction and loud concerts. At the time none of it bothered me, but when I got back into construction a few years later it was borderline painful to run power tools without ear pro. And tinnitus is pretty darn annoying... At least I have an excuse for when the wife says I'm not listening to her...

Which brand are you using? Where did you get fitted etc?

I’m using molded plugs that I get through work but can’t get an electronic option through work. Would love to get set up with electronic moulded in ear plugs. Specially for bird hunting.

The problem I find with electronic protection is that you may hear the sound, but you can't tell where it's coming from. Thats a deal breaker for me in the bush.
