Hunting/Hiking with a chassis based rifle?

I just pulled the stock off of my Tikka T3 Varmint 300WSM, it weighs 35.6 oz ... so I'd save just under 10 oz on this rifle with the MDT HNT26 stock.

Thats a huge weight savings! :)

BTW, on a different topic I also just pulled the trigger spring and clipped the first coil off...safety checks great and is now 1.5lbs pull :)

If you don't think 10 ounces is huge, then you're just not getting it. Just sayin'. :)
No comment on the trigger...

Hmmm, that's what I said...its a huge weight savings. I don't think you're getting what I said, or maybe I didn't explain it properly.

So after you fire your signal echoing signal shots your buddies can wander around in circles for another half day trying to find where the noise came from. Can get a good pair of radios these days for less than one “payload” of signal shots costs these days….

Because hearing a voice on a radio will let my buddy know my location? Alot easier to zero in on gun shots

Simmer down hot shot, the internet turns everyone into a badass. If you think a normal day for plenty of guys in your province is braggadocio I can’t help you. BB is a big boy he can respond on his own

If you’re gonna talk #### about people not walking in the bush maybe don’t choose someone who walks in the woods for a living….

I know 21 year old girls who could bury both of you lmfao

I’m sure brynbenn is glad you have risen to his defence for no ####ing reason though. Are you also in the shotgun, chassis, 60 extra shots because you are in such remote southern Ontario bush club or did you just feel like picking a fight?

Part of back country camping and hunting is bringing your gear with you. I dont care how you spend your days. I like to take off and spend several days in the bush hunting multiple species. Whether its bear wolf ducks grouse or rabbits. I also pack in food and cooking and sleeping gear. Just because i live in southern ontario doesnt mean i dont travel to hunt

Sure, as long the speaker is smart enough to relay their geographical location or even coordinates!

You can also provide a lot more information like

“I have an animal down!”

“I’m injured!”

“I’m over here posing by the old car!”

“I need another 60 rounds of ammo!”

I have to go with brybenn on this one but maybe take it a step further. To you radio guys, are these walkie talkies or uhf/vhf radios you're carrying? Are you calling just your friends or out to the general public? I have never hunted with a radio, do you leave it on all the time or do you have set check in times? I would think I would be pretty pissed if I had just stalked something for a couple of hours and the radio scared it off! What if you break your radio or, as I've seen many electronic things do in the bush, it breaks itself? Do you all stop hunting and go look for the quiet person? What if they were stalking an animal and didn't make check in because of that and then you come blundering in and scare it off?

I hunt alone a lot and I can't hear some other hunter who is in trouble if he is calling on a radio but I sure as hell can hear him if he's letting off three shot distress signals and I'm probably going to have to hear it a couple of times before I'm sure it's not someone just shooting at game. If said hunter is not near me I'm going to need him to do a couple more strings to get me headed in the right direction to find him so more ammo used. Where do you guys draw the line on what is too much ammo for your tastes and cause you to denigrate another members' choices because you know everything about everything, huh?????? If you want to carry it, more ammo on hand is better than less ammo every time, anybody with half a brain can see that! I can't even really believe any real gun nut would spout such nonsense.

Remember, always shoot signal shots in the direction that you think you’re friends are coming from. Trust me. I know everything about everything!!

You can carry half of the cabelas gun counter around with you if you want, have fun!

Brybenns choice of 90 rounds and 2 guns for a day hunt is outlandish enough to warrant some mild teasing! I’m sorry I hurt your feelings!

WHISTLE! Holy ####

So you hear somebody blowing a whistle in the woods and you know it's a distress signal and go try to find them??? A whistle's sound travels as far as the sound of a 3 shot distress signal, the universal standard I might add, not a hope in hell! Holy #### yourself.

You're in the woods, no trees to shoot into to control your bullets? 3 shots is the universal distress signal and you may need to do a few of them before somebody even hears it so as I said, more ammo is always better than less.

A whistle is a good idea to have while hunting, we are required to have one at work (in the bush). If we’re in trouble we blow it 3 times, it does travel pretty far. Everyone wears it on their shirt collar where it’s accessible without hands, the premise is if we get pinned by a tree and can’t use our arms we can still reach the whistle and call for help. We carry radios and do check ins every 30 or 60 mins depending on where we’re working or what we’re doing, I could probably hear a whistle through the ear pro on my helmet. Maybe over the noise of my chainsaw at idle, not while it’s cutting but we listen for each other when the saw is shut off.

Then you buddy can plug in your coordinates from your GPS to his (Garmin Etrex is a lot cheaper and lighter than a bunch of ammo) , plus you can actually tell him what the issue is.
I really think you are just trying to win an argument but you do whatever you want

I just keep it simple and carry 1 bullet, and 3 radios.

If you are worried about being lost get Garmin Inreach. Then you can text your buddy and he will have your exact coordinates. You can also text him things like "Deer down, bring your pack and the whiskey" and he can respond to you.

Just mount a radio on one of those nifty ARCA rails on the chassis, right between the bipod and the laser. If weight becomes a concern, perhaps temporarily remove the grenade launcher, just for hunting. And really, a small radio only weighs perhaps one tenth as much as 90 rounds of ammo ...I actually had to go back and re-read to confirm that this number wasn't an exaggeration...

Thanks, guys, this thread is the kind of thing that makes CGN what it is today! :dancingbanana: :runaway: G:

Chasis based systems are old school. Go with a single piece reciever design like the Sig Cross or if you want to get spendy, The Fix by Q is good option. Throw a couple rail covers on so your hands don't get the life drained out of them by exposed metal in winter, and your away.

Finally... 10 pages later f:P:

weird thread.....
I have toyed with the bolt gun in a chassis thing for a while now and still haven't taken the plunge.
I'm still one for wood for hand layed composite , be it glass or carbon fiber.
In a perfect world I think carbon fiber over aluminum or magnesium would be the best of both worlds and would warm to the touch unlike aluminum alone and many "gappy" areas and tolerances can be fine tuned with the carbon fiber overmold.

as for communicating with hunting partners...... Get yourself a Garmin Inreach and the yearly subscription. This way no matter where you and your hunting buddies roam and no matter how far apart you get, a simple text back and forth gives you the exact locations of your hunting partners on your cellphone and it overlays those coordinates on the map on your phone thru the inreach app.
It's pretty much becoming a no brainer to have such a device and service at your fingertips. Couple it with a Garmin GPS device or tablet type device and recharge it anywhere with a roll up or fold up portable solar charger.
