I am moving to Yellowknife this summer. What can I expect for hunting oppurtunities in the NWT? I am used to Mule Deer by the herd, Whitetail, & various chicken species...and the odd moose.

I know that I am kissing my 4 month gopher cull goodbye.

Be gentle.

So...I'll be okay. (the whole no gophers this sux). Anybody want to buy an extremely pimped Stevens 200 ins .223?

Not wanting to believe great northern hunter, I checked for myself. Every other province I have lived in has the RCMP / Canadian Forces exception.

.................Except NWT.:bangHead:

Hopefully my posting gets schittcanned.

great hunting but a 2 year waiting period to become a resident, and only residents can hunt big game.

Well that blows. :(

Any rationale behind this...Ont requires 6 months in last 12 to be considered a resident.
The NWT must be overrun with game considering a population of about 42,000 people, and a land mass of 1.1 million square KM.

Are they afraid of the hoards of southerners that would move to Norman Wells just to hunt if the residency rule was only 6 months?

It is also one grizzly Bear in your lifetime, after the two year wait to become a resident of course....

when i moved up to he NWT i spent 2 years doing more bird and rabbit hunting than i had ever done in life, loads of fun but that third year was well woth the wait. i also know many others that moved here and got their big game license right away as they never ask for proof of residency! I'm actually one of two guys that i'm aware of that actually waited the two years.

i'm a apprentice carpenter,, life is great up here, barren land caribou season is just starting to get good. i don't think i'll get a crack at them this year but i still have a freezer full from the fall. Great fishing end of may for grayling, walleye in july and august, moose, woodland caribou, sheep, grizzly, goat, wolf,....... and many others in Sept,

It is a shame that in the NWT a non-resident Canadian is in the same boat as a non-resident alien, or that a system like they have in the Yukon where a resident can accompany a non-resident for some big game does not exist. RCMP and other federal employees who are often on a 2 year rotation are particularly disadvantaged. Perhaps a letter to the appropriate minister could provide you with an exception.

good luck with writing a letter to the appropriate minister, i've come to know many RCMP while here and they are all in the same boat. It is a stupid rule and it seems to me that the people in power are doing more to restrict the opportunities of resident hunter rather than encourage and or help them

need a good reason...

So you need a good reason...

The north is full of migrant workers.
The DEW line, diamond mines, remote exploration/drill camps, summer freight barges and construction workers, winter ice road truckers etc...

Many from PQ
NFLD
ontario the new have not province :dancingbanana:
All high tax provinces.

Now the above mentioned migrant worker is not there a week till somebody explains the following myth...
All you do is get a northern PO box. Then claim yourself as a resident and save thousands on income tax.

So buddy the construction worker who works 2 months, fly's home for 2 weeks, works 2 more months, gets laid off then fly's home.
Then at year end try's to claim as a northerner:rolleyes:. With nothing but a receipt for a PO box. Back east he has lived for 30 years and has a truck, wife and kids, taxes, power bill. Like in paper trail. Good luck.

But in the process buddy also goes for a territories hunting tag.
Maybe they are easier to fool than revenue Canada. They were when I lived up there.

Now you are northerner to busy working to get out and hunt.
When you do your favorite moose camp is taken by buddy and the boys.

Or you are a local/native guy with no trade. Every year southerners show up and take the best jobs then leave. You are way out of town to where the caribou herd is. You know to wait and let the herd come to you. Or use natural cover and move towards them slow. Then buddy shows up and starts chasing them with fancy new quads and trucks.

So do you suppose a real northerner may complain? Would you?

It's actually a "native inspired thing" that came about a few years ago when they wanted to make it 10 years residency requirement from the original 1 year. With a lot of work and a bit of common sense it became two years requirement. The cops and military lost as before it was the day they arrived.

We've tried to get "buddy" hunts and got shot down each time by the bands.

"And now you know the rest of the story ......"

According to people I've talked to in the Minister's office (I was bored one day) the problem with changing the legislation to allow the residency period to go to 6 months is all the consultation they have to go through.
