I'm really confused with this whole business of where to hunt. MNR tells me I can hunt on crown land, but than the municipalities tell me I can't. I heard people hunted up on crown land north of Peterborough, near Kawarthas Highland Provincial Park, and there is a good swath of Crown land out there. I'm confused because the area I'm looking at belongs in the Township of Trent Lakes, which is part of Peterborough County. So which one takes precedent, township or county bylaws? And is the County of Peterborough the same as the City of Peterborough? - Which I know has a no-discharge bylaw. I tried googling for right answer, but to no avail. Help please?

Hard to give a correct answer without knowing the exact spot where you want to hunt, but if it's near the petroglyphs you can hunt there (obviously not in a park) and will see many guys there come deer season. The area near kosh lake you can hunt on one side of the road but not the other (its very well posted where you can't). As far as the bylaws, you can't discharge within city limits, but once you're out of the city it's completely legal. We hunt near bridgenorth on some farms, and have for years, never had a problem. Do a search on the municipality's website for "discharge" or "firearms"; most have a bylaw online with a map indicating where the limits for shooting are. Outside of that should be legal, with owner's permission if it is private or on crown land.

Drive through lakefield and continue on to county rd#6 (formerly stoney lake road) and drive past Reid's store, the land on your right hand side is all crown. There are a few trails leading in there for quads, but I drive my pickup in there sometimes too. You can target shoot back there. There's a few good spots where you can use a hill for a backstop. I grew up back there and have been targeting shooting there for 20+ years. Never had any problems, just make sure you drive in at least a couple km so as not to bother anyone. Hope that helps.
You have to comply with all by-laws. No dischagre means no shooting, period. Even on Crown Land. No by-law means shooting/hunting is fine as long as you're safe.

You answered your own question with the No Dischagre.
Sucks, but eventually you will figure out the interpetaions of the hunting regs and the local municiple by-laws.

As usual you have no clue what you are talking about..... the city and county have the same name.... county rules differ from city rules.... he is good to go in the county.... have hunted there personally.....
