hunting in southern ontario from the north

I will be hunting in southern ontario this fall for deer. The area allows only muzzleloader rifles and shotguns. I do not own a muzzleloader (I need one) but I own 2 ithica shotguns a model 300 and a 900 both are semi auto and both are in excellent shape and have never let me down. I have never hunted deer with a shotgun before. what is a 2 3/4 range? anyone have 1st hand knowledge of what I will be doing this year. ...Oh yea neither one has a rifled barrel....should I buy a muzzleloader?

I know I can reach out and touch some deer with my presision rifles...but old semi auto shotguns???

With the right slug(forget buckshot altogether. It's not reliable enough.), you'd be surprised at the groups that are possible at 100 yards. Even with an elderly smoothbore. Two to three inches at 100 yards isn't unusual. That's plenty for deer. Most shots will be well under 100 anyway. Mind you, you'll have to try as many brands of slugs as you can to find the ones your shotgun likes.

if you can afford a muzle loader get one .if not don't worry. theres been plenty of deer taken with a smoothed bored 2 3/4 barrel.as others said practice til you find the ammo your guns like
 
If the season is Shotgun and/or ML, I'd buy a 870 with a rifled barrel instead of the muzzleloader. If you're hunting a shotgun season and a muzzleloader only season, then buy a ML and use it for both. I guess what I'm wondering is what WMU are you hunting??
 
You are hunting in the shotgun season which allows both SG and ML. Depending on which WMU you are hunting we also have a later ML/Archery only season. Use the shotguns you have and try different brand of slugs to see what groups the best out of your gun. Wear lots of hunter orange as you will likely see many other hunters, not like northern Ontario. If you hunt in a good area you should see lots of deer and I do not want to stir the pot but take a few buckshots with you as there is a place for them if used properly. I hunt the ML only season to avoid the crowd and we are always done in two days with the longest shot about 60 yards, well within a smooth bore barrel range.
 
I will be in 77b My friends parents have 6 acers of hardwoods backing on to a river valley and a 300-400 acer farm feild. Seen lot of deer while turkey hunting. I beleive both ML and SG are allowed for the gun season which is only 5 or so days. Bow is open for a long time down there and I just may get a bow! Last year I smoked a 22lb gobbler at 52 yards with one of my ithicas using 2 3/4 rem. heavy shot! I never used SG for anything other than birds, this is why I wanted to get some insight on using a 2 3/4 smooth bore SG for deer.
 
I have used Challanger 2 3/4 inch rifled slugs in my smooth bore and they worked terrific. I was surprised on how well I can control the shots. I had found these slugs reasonably priced and quite nice to shoot. Not too much recoil and good grouping. Good luck.
 
For what it is worth:

If you are looking at getting a muzzle loader, it's worth the trip down to the states ... you can pick up two ML's for the price of the same one up here.

Since you are allowed to carry multiple muzzle loaders while hunting ... this might just be the best way to go ... that is if you interested in hunting with a muzzle loader.

My boss was telling me that he's heading down to the States to grab some Muzzle Loaders.

He mentioned that they Muzzle Loader he was looking at up here was around 500 - 600 at which ever gun shop he went to, but in the States he could get the same one for about half that price.

He said something about how Muzzle Loaders aren't covered by the Laws and stuff that reqire that Form 6 or what ever it is from the ATF, so you can buy them in the US then just Register them when you get to the Boarder.

If anyone else knows more about this please correct me if I'm totally off base, as funny as it would be to see him arrested, I would like to save him the embrassment if he's wrong.
 
I agree with Blargon on the rifled barrel, but if you just wanna use a smooth barrel, by all means, but practise practise practise. When you have mastered it then practise some more. I have had no luck with foster slugs at all.
