Was out this morning until my coat got so heavy I thought I'd best make for the Jeep.
The snow was fading fast, but there's still a good foot on the ground acting like a big sponge.
I went to check one of the back buildings, and get some snowshoes, after the mornings hunt was fruitless. On my way out, the dang lock wouldn't shut, so I gave it a big smack or rather several with the heel of my palm until it did. (no snowshoes there by the way) Turing to leave, I see the outline of a huge deer clearly, about a hundred and fifty yards off, against the white backdrop of the hillside. It was just standing there, paying me no heed, looking off downwind. An easy rifle shot, with all the time in the world, but not with a crossbow. I stared and stared, but could not see it's head against the dark trees behind it. It was so large, as to warrant disbelief on my part that I was looking at a deer, and not just a bunch of bushes. Then, it waggled it's tail, and left the opening, vanishing into the trees. Seconds later, a normal sized deer, seemingly half the size of the first, enters the same little clearing.
Then suddenly, the big deer is back, tails are up and they are gone. It wasn't me that spooked them, never found out what did.
I made a big circle around to try and get in front of them, but they didn't show.
It was so wet by then, that puddles were forming under the snow, and I was drenched. I hung around for another two hours anyway, but to no avail.
on the way out, I checked a spot I visited yesterday. There, in the deep snow drift, was the print of a very large deer. Carefully placing his feet in each one of my footprints!
