So my moms cousin lives in Yukon and has invited me out for a hunt sometime. What would be the best animal to hunt on this trip. Being from Nova Scotia all we have are whitetail and black bear, and if your lucky enough (which I think the draw is rigged) you MIGHT get a moose license. Just curious as to what would be the most worth while exciting memorable animal to hunt.

Given where you live I'd target something new to you. I'd try for a moose, caribou, or maybe even a goat depending on what type of hunting your cousin is into.

Providing your mom's cousin is willing to get their guide licence and you are willing to pay the harvest fee, caribou would be at the top of my list if you will be in the right area....

Just came back from my first tour of the Yukon, amazing country, vastly different than what you are used to. Caribou would be a unique experience and goats come to mind. They have different varieties, only 37,000 people in the whole place so not much pressure.

Unfortunately, non residents aren't allowed to hunt goats in the Yukon..... Unless maybe with a fully licensed outfitter.....

first thing i will do is asking your cousin to build points for the draw on special guiding and then he will be able to guide you for bison caribou or moose.
the time is over where grizzly was on the menu and now this is only moose or caribou or bison. wolf or black bear can be added ...

goat well there is one draw for resident and another place for non resident for guided by outfitter and there is a remote place to go ...

as a resident: caribou is giving a lot of attraction with barren and woodland (we called them mountain) and they can be find as high as sheep and they swim well also. but seems our moose attract of lot of attention too ...

now let s talk about the rifle you are bringing in ...

First thing I'd ask your first cousin once removed before making species choices is which draws he's put in, and what species he hunts and is willing to chase with you. Yet to meet someone offering a family favour hunt who accepts requests for any species desired, unless they owe you a lot of money.

Yeah read the regs. I have visitors on my hunts but they can't harvest. The only hunt (without special guide licence for non residents with a resident) for a non resident is small game which us pretty much bird. So unless he has grabbed one of 100 (I think it's still at that number) guiding licences, grab a shotgun and head up.

Angus if a non resident is hunting under a special guiding license the draw is only for the license. we have a lot of aeras where there is no need for draw and a non resident needs to go on those places so luckily the draw is only on for the resident to be drawn.

the other stuff and valid for any hunt is be sure who you are hunting with as being on a hosted hunt do not clear you from the laws ....

we all started there when you have to deal with the one year of probation before heading out for big game ...

Yep...... Was actually thinking of flying up for a hunt and visiting you and Ted until I did my research........ May still be heading up in a year or so for a fishing trip though!

Learning about the Yukon's system, good stuff! In the meantime come play here Brad. ;)

It's happening..... No doubt...... Will get that email sent out shortly....

the Yukon knowledge comes from the following year's plans (woods bison).....

As of now, my Yukon plans would consist of only a flight and hotel for a week and a visit with Ted and Phil, and hopefully some fishing........ And some of Marg's cooking!

I'm headed to the Yukon in Sept for moose and/or caribou. I have my special guide permit and my buddy (Yukon resident) has his guiding licence so we are prepping our hunt now. Will also head into Alaska for some salmon fishing while I'm out there. So excited to jump on the plane and get out there hunting. Should be quite the experience. Happy hunting!
