Filson is IMHO the absolute top of the line for this type of use. I've got the shelter cloth outfitter coat (3/4 length) with the midweight wool liner. It's very warm, very breathable, very weather proof and very comfortable. I've been using it for 2 years so far and it looks better every time I put it on as the oilcloth breaks in and gains character. The Filson stuff is bombproof - you'll notice the high quality as soon as you put it on.

Most of their coats have a 'storm collar' which when not folded down stands quite high and has a front closure. The collar is lined with moleskin and is very comfortable.

With the midweight wool liner my coat is comfortable down to about -12 to -15 degrees when wearing a sweater underneath. If you want something even warmer you can get the heavy weight liner or a more substantial coat such as the packer.

BTW: I really like the looks of thier 'Highlander' boot and will probably purchase a pair this year.
 
I've got a Flecktarn parka for later season hunts and a Flecktarn combat shirt for earlier season hunts, or a cheap camo fleece jacket I got at Army and Navy for $10.00.

Various fleece and wool shirts to wear underneath depending on the weather.
 
I have a columbia bomber length 3x1 parka. It's waterproof, windproof, not too heavy, extremely warm(often too warm) it's also very quiet. I see them in catalogues, but I bought mine for 1/2 price at crappy tire.
Best coat I've ever owned.

Good to know :) . They're a bit pricey, but I haven't been able to find anything comparable for cheaper and with Filson you generally get what you pay for.
 
Hey iluvmy300 there is no Filson dealers in Manitoba. The closest dealer would be wholesale sports in Saskatoon.
 
Wholesale in Calgary is listed as a dealer, but I've rarely found much selection there. If you can find a place to look at a couple coats that's great, but you'll probably have the best luck ordering direct from Filson.
 
Amongst others in the cupboards are a Filson Double Mackinaw, an LL Bean
wool Cruiser, an LL Bean 4-in-1 and a Drake Waterfowl parka.

First off you'll need to get over that "one coat to do it all" attitude.
There's no such thing, just as there's no such thing as "an all around
gun". You can pull a manure spreader with a Corvette, but there's
certainly better equipment to do that with. Your late August comfy coat
won't be worth a pinch in November ... and your deer hunting coat will
be like a sauna in August !

Bless her heart ... but go pick yourself a coat with a purpose in mind and the kind of specific weather you will be out in.

It was my way to poke at those guys who spend a fortune on a camo hunting jacket then feel they have to wear it everywhere to get their money out of it. (Coming from a guy who wears camo boxer shorts eh?....lol)

You make a few good points. However, how would you mount a hitch on that 'Vette? :p

Seriously though, the main period my coat will be worn is about the middle of October to the beginning of December. That should put the temp range around 5deg to -15deg.
 
Take a look at the Cabelas stuff.

I bought a jacket and it ripped straight down the back somehow. I e-mailed Cabelas and they shipped a new one to me today. They didnt even wanna see it or anything. Now thats super custimor serivce.
 
Cabelas does have excellent service. I've never tried any of their branded clothing but I've purchased some Columbia and North Face stuff from them over the years.
 
If you're not stuck on buying from a Canadian retailer, Google "Wing Supply" in the U.S., and check out their clearance items. I recently purchased a 4 in 1 parka...zip out reversible inner, lots of pockets, gortex, quiet, detachable hood... Even with exchange, shipping, and the $ grab by customs it was a much better deal than I could find locally.

... Sounds like a "4-in-1" is what you need (and probably want).
Pick a quality retailer, try it on to make sure it fits with a bit of
layering underneath, and choose colour/camo appropriate for
what you will be doing most of the time. Goer Tex & Holofil are
a couple of components to look for. Beware the off-shore poor
imitatation crap.
 
i bought a remington 6-n-1 parka from wally world for $99 a few seasons back warm as hell even in minus 30 but its blaze orange which is a good thing and bad thing at the same time LOL
 
Another endorsement for Filson.

If you want camo however, there is nothing better than Rivers West. Best material I've ever seen by far for camo hunting clothing. Wholesale sells that stuff too.
