Hunting knife

There are all sorts of knives out there with varying tastes and budgets for everybody - as long as its good and sharp thats 90% of it right there so invest in a stone as well. I've skinned a deer with a cheap Spyderco folder I had in my pocket, and I've also used my SOG Field Pup II which given the price is a great deal. There are more expensive knives out there, depends on your budget.

I know a lot of people have opinions about the Nutnfancy individual on Youtube, but if you can ignore political opinion for a moment his knife reviews are very detailed and accurate.

It's a razor blade with a handle. What more could you want for effective cutting?

When it gets dull, toss the blade, replace with new $0.50 blade, and continue.
 
Since i got my first MORA knife last year i find a rarely take anything else with me but a mora. It's light, so far it's been quite durable, holds an edge really well, and for the $16 i paid for it, i don't mind being rough with it, and if it breaks, no big deal, i can buy a whole bucket full for the cost of some other knives.
 
Was given a "Puma Hunters Pal" in the early 70's, it had seen misuse when I got it. Sharpened it up, built a new case for it, and it has done exceptional duty for me since, the Puma only comes out when there's meat on the ground. My general duty pocket knives are, Swiss Army- Russack, and a Cadet. I have a small collection of older Puma's.

Jnyiri, I have met Ron Post and was impressed with the quality of his knives and style of knife making. Have been thinking of ordering one in particular.

I have to put a rope on mine because everyone try to stele it after they try.:)) At first time when I meet Ron on the Sportsman show I didn't taught much about his knives but the price was so low I have to buy one. Soon is you try theme out you will see he knows what he is doing. Now I have several and give away some (just because I can replace them easy). Now I'm thinking about to sell my Charles May, Robert Dark and others.

I haven't used it yet but I picked up a Ka-Bar BK17 which I suspect will do quite nicely for all my needs. Now I just need to buy another one to have a backup.
 
I use handmade knives almost exclusively now. I still have a Puma White Hunter and an older Ruana that will always be with me, but more and more I use knives made by my father or myself. Added a new little beauty to my hunting bag that was made by my brother for Christmas.

Just like nice rides, it's just more satisfying to hunt with good knives.
 
The Buck alpha hunter is my big folding knife. It has a gut hook and a good skinning blade. Not good for the detail stuff though, and I have a collection of small folders that I use for that. You need something sharp with a fine pointed edge for doing butt cutting jobs, unless you use one of those new corkscrew contraptions.

I have done several complete gutting jobs with just a little Chinese folder made to look like a Buck folding hunter of long ago, but with a tiny 2" blade. It worked very well indeed, and I have to say it's all you really need for gutting. No good of course for wood chopping, hacking jobs etc.

X2. All you need. Get used to keeping the carbon steel dry, and you'll never go back to stainless...
