Hi everyone
I was reading the hunting and trapping regulations synopsis from BC and found this:
"It is unlawful to use a firearm that is designed, altered or intended to be aimed and fired by the action of one hand or that has a barrel less than 305 mm in length."
So if I was planning to buy a 12" barrel (304.8 mm) lever gun I won't be able to use for hunting.
Lever action hunters what are you using and what are you hunting?
thanks

Ok, that's weird...

If I had to guess it falls into the no handgun hunting realm, it doesn’t cover a wildlife defence gun. In B.C. you can be in the bush with a gun for predator defence and not have a hunting license, take the 8.5” barrelled Grizzly’s for instance. Longer than 26” in OAL and NR classed, not legal to hunt with but legal to have on you while hiking or camping or to shoot an animal that is trying to harm you.

Uhhh... That doesn't sound right. 304.8 is clearly under 305...

By significant digits, they are the same: 304,8mm to zero decimal places is 305mm.

(The CFP doesn't seem to use the mathematical concept of significant digits, but rather ‘round up no matter what.’ In this way a 105,08mm handgun barrel let' say, is Registered as 106mm…)

The Regulation in the OP is a common Provincial thing, copy wording from the Federal Law to make it a double offence which is not really needed. By limiting the Transport and discharge of handguns, the CC and FA effectively remove the option of hunting with a Restricted, but several Provinces have doubled down anyway.

By significant digits sure. But this isn't physics class... And just because the CFP rounds up doesn't mean that's how the law is applied, it's just how their computer system is set up... Unless you can show me legalize or precedence to show that's the way it is?

I can't imagine a judge would look at that and say it's close enough. Maybe I'm wrong about how this would be interpreted, but to me, 304.### is less than 305 and I wouldn't be willing to chance it.

Just for my own curiosity what lever gun has a 12 inch barrel?

Maybe this, Rossi Ranch Hand or any of the other mare's legs

I don't know about the ranch hand, but the Henry lists as being over 12 inches on their Mare's leg.

RH is 12". I am really not worried about it at all. It's killed a couple of deer and a few coyotes. I have also shot a few animals with a 10" barrel on my Contender Carbine.

I don't think they will have a micrometer to measure the difference. You are talking the thickness of 2 sheets of paper .
