I heard a rumor that border services at Maine (US officers) are requiring a hunting permit from one of the lower states (ie: ALaskan not gonna cut it?)

I was planning on travelling to the southern US next month,...I have a current valid ATF form 6NIA, and ALaskan permit. I may have confused it with going to a store to purchase and the requirements of the store...

I believe the North Dakota license is $17 and is an automatic download.

I have heard that Washington State was doing this, but I haven't heard of any others. I use a PA license (because I actually hunt there) to cross into NY & Michigan for USPSA matches without incident.

From 'Lost Target' website:

If You Experience a Problem at the Border

First, request to see the supervior on duty and try to resolve the issue. If that fails and you are denied entry with a firearm; record date, time, border entry location, badge number and/or name of official, and nature of incident.
Fax (304) 616-4551 the information to the ATF, and follow it up with a telephone (304) 616-4550 call to ATF within 72 hours. Citizens should also contact the Counsular office for their country and provide the same information sent to the ATF.
Canada: The Consular Affairs Bureau of Foreign Affairs Canada assists thousands of Canadians each year in dealing with problems in foreign countries. The Consular Affairs Bureau in Ottawa, working through more than 270 offices in other countries, provides assistance and support to all. Without the shooter registering a formal complaint, their is very little that can be done to resolve border crossing issues with firearms. Most problems seen at vehicle border crossings has to do with local customs officials not fully aware of ATF firearm policies and paperwork requirements.

Same as what PMT post I think

Crossing into
NY and MI... 'Never been an issue.

They've often asked to see a match invite or something to support our stated reason for entering the US, but never been hassled when without.

Then again... I think by now they see us comin' and think.. "Not you guys again" :D

I have use the ND for years. However you might have a problem with the gun safety course requirement if you are a young guy. had a friend try to get it and it wouldn't let him pass this part so he got Alaska instead.

I'm sad to see that Alaska has jacked the price - "Nonresident Alien Annual Hunting $300.00 - to a degree that seems to border on hostility.
<http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=license.prices>

CBP agents based in Maine and Nova Scotia won't be seeing many more Alaska hunting licenses.

Fortunately, Maine will still sell us an "Alien Small Game Hunt" license for US$79.

Are you sure... I just bought my Non res alien small game lic for Alaska a day ago... $20

Just checked.. $300 is for the regular hunting lic. You don't need that one. The $20 small game is good enough for a F6NIA

I guess that would be me eh?

ND cannot be acquired if you are born after a certain date. Alaska is bought online and is $20. You get to print the license, but a yellow original arrives in the post.

If the border guards are rejecting Alaska, that is unfortunate because ATF regulations clearly state that any valid hunting license, from any State, is sufficient to allow you access into the US. It is NOT dependent on your traveling direction.

it's not so much the hunting lic. that gets you in.
All the lic. does is allow you to fall into one of the exemptions re. The baring of NIA's from bringing guns into the USA.
That's it.

BATFE follows the letter of the law.

Perhaps those running into trouble at the border are dealing with DHS who are not.

Well it amounts to the same thing. You just read the small print. It's called being pedantic.

Not going to get the Alaska license this year, past three times i have crossed into Alaska the officers could care less about the license. They wanted the form 6 and the invitation to the event.

I have never had the hunting license, only the match invitations, never been a problem.

I get AK $20 Lic. every year and indicate and include a copy of it every time I apply for ATF Form 6 NIA. That said, I get official USPSA Eligibility Letter every year, USPSA invite to all matches and events for whole year, IDPA invite for all matches and events for whole year... every year, and submit those along ATF Application too.
Never had a single problem at the border; there were times they’d just get me ‘waved thru’ without any checks at all.
Coming back home to Canada has been more 'eventful' on average thou as 'average' CBSA kids know nothing and are too bent out of shape to give you a good power trip.

Hunting licenses get you a 1 year expiry on your form 6...depending on the invitation, you might not get this otherwise. Or so I've heard

Every Form6 is good for FULL YEAR from date it was approved. You don't need a copy of hunting lic to backup your approved and valid Form6.
If you go to US for hunting - get proper hunting lic. If you compete there - get to know ROs, CROs, MDs RMs and so on of the ranges you shoot at; and get invitation letter/s from the person in charge.

Thats just what I've heard...never happened to me though.

I usually travel with both...an annual hunting license and match invitations. Personally, I prefer the match invitations just in case I get pull over by Joe patrolman who doesn't know that an Alaskan license is perfectly legal.

I carry all the paperwork in a nice file/folder myself; hunt. lic, invites, ranges' locations etc included. Along with all the letters, names and phone numbers of the range and match officials.
I used to go to one US range (as member) for practice!!! once in a while; reason at the border would be 'practice' as well. Just gave it up last 2011 year. The range is only 10km away from my place, US$50 annual membership too.
