I'm buying myself a remington 700 r5 in .308 and I'm looking for some advise on a scope. I plan on using this gun to go hunting in northern Alberta, and also take to the range for some long distance shooting. I'm pretty sure the range here goes out to 1000 yards. Not sure if I really need to shoot that far.. So am I going to be able to buy a scope that will cover up 1-300 yard hunting, and still be able to shoot acurately out to 600+?

Leupold Vx3 4.5-14x40 Long Range would be good. 30mm tube with gobs of elevation adjustment. I had Korth install a M1 dial. I've had it on a 7mm out to 1050y and a 308 to 800y, works well.

lol. Exactly what I have. The mark 4 4.5-14x40 has the (fairly) light weight of a 40mm objective, but is still clear at long range. The mildot also works in low light, and for small target practise on paper.

A very under rated scope IMO.

Vortex Viper HS was designed exactly for your hunting application! Great options for the dollars spent. Bright crisp glass and turret adjustments match the end result on the target. I just came back from a range trip near dusk with my Viper HS 2.5-10x44 mounted on my 6.5-06 - shooting west in overcast setting sun conditions and I could not be happier.

After what i am seeing i guess i will give it a try to my winter coyotes hunts with my Icon P. H. 6.5 Creedmoor and my Sightron Big Sky, that combo shoot awsome, just dont know for sure how a 6.5 will react in the winter winds, i guess i will have to find out on trial and errors... JP.

I have the exact same scope (in duplex reticle) for my hunting rig; a switch barrel .22-250/.308 (soon to add .260 Rem) Rem M700 SPS DM. This scope will do several duties and some LR work at coyotes once in a while. The rest of the time, it spends most of the summer hunting groundhogs with me as a .22-250.

Enjoy the search! It's all good. Buy what works for your game and your budget! :D

Cheers,

Barney

Really depends on the mount, as different manufacturers size their heights differently.
You can get away with a Talley Low LW with the 4.5-14x44 Conquest on most any rifle.
I run a DNZ Low Mount with the above scope in a 50mm objective on a heavy barrel contour, as the scope is 14" long & the objective bell easily clears the raised contour at the start of the barrel. It's .980" from the base of the mount to the centerline of the ring.
This allows the 50mm scope to sit at the same height as it's 44mm sibling, and keeps my cheek weld comfortable.

This sounds like a very good choice; did you need a medium height mount with this scope, or could you make it fit with a low mount?
Thanks,
