Hunting moose?

Moose hunting in Québec.
343$ per moose tag for a non-resident (55$ for resident) no draw (with antlers) but you need 2 tags per moose (in some place up to 4).

You need to buy the tag before the season open otherwise it's not valid (and they'll usually sell it tou you anyway and charge you with poaching...) and it's valid only for one hunting zone.

From NB Zone 1 is all Gaspésie up to road 132 (Mont-Joli to Matapedia)

West of that is zone 2 (up to La Pocatière)

The saddest thing about NB is you can't draw a tag but you can always go to any reservation and buy moose meat for a buck/lb cut&wrapped....or even better, just trade even for beer and save'em the trip to the liquor store.
Or,....If you are really desperate, marry an Indian girl, go hunting to-morrow .:)

What's the draw system like in Nova Scotia? I understand 99% of the moose hunting is all up in Cape Breton now.

Nova Scotia draw is even worse than NB (if that's possible?) from what I hear and is truly a once in a lifetime affair?I beleive 100% of "legal" moose hunting in NS is on CBI.....mainland moose in NS are endangered.Cape Breton moose are not even native maritimers, they were introduced from northern AB/BC and have bigger, nicer racks than typical eastern CDN moose.

Maybe NFLD should offer a discount or FREE tag to NB residents being as we gave them their original 7 moose to begin with, now they're overun with moose and we're overun with govt. sanctioned native poachers......raw deal.

I think they are going to have a moose cull in Terra Nova national park. They have been talking about it for a while now. There are so many moose here that you have to push them out of the way to lie down to get a shot ;)

in alberta depends where you want to hunt down in the waterton lakes area up to 15 years
where we go (fox Creek) 5 years ago you could get one every year now its ever 5 further north every year
All priority levels
last year both my brother and i where drawn

hmmmm, I caution you not to get in over your head. Perhaps try deer hunting first? A moose is a massive animal, and if you have no hunting experience, could be an absolute nightmare to handle by yourself.

Theirs many lessons you can learn from gutting/transporting/hanging/preparing deer that can be applied to moose, you only have to deal with 150lbs, not 1000.

i agree
even with two people a moose 15o yards or more in the bush is hard work
ive never caried one out by my self dont want to .
deer hunting in alberta no draw required and if you hunt some areas you can have more tags than your freezer can hold .even a big mule deer is a lot to handle by yourself 300 plus pounds
deer hunting is so much more fun
although the mass of a big bull up close is incredible
last year he came to 8 yards dident have a shot then he ran to 40 yards and i stoped him with a grunt
it was unreal how big they are when your up close

Tools required to retrive a moose.

-A good knife.
-A chainsaw or recipricating saw.
-Rope or chain.
-An atv or snowmobile.
-Tarps and meat bags.
-Quad ramps and a hand winch to load into truck

And as many friends you can threaten/ bribe into helping.

Really you use that much. We have a good knife, saw and a hand bar. No atv, tarps or meat bags. And certainly no winch. That's what the saw and knife are for to get it into quarters to put in the truck.

my dad shoots them in the neck they drop like flies ,not the proper shot in anyones book and i would never take that shot but my dad alone has killed over 40 moose hes 82 now still hunts and will always still shoot for the neck if he misses he misses but if he hits him hes down never see him miss though at 80 years old he shot a deer at 150 yards free hand off hand and then shot anouther 2 hours later off hand at 80 yards never seen anything like it. hope he hunts forever

Old hunters can shoot the eye of a fly off a car without scratching the paint.

I know my grandfather is certainly in that boat.

NS gives out 335 either ### tags to residents each year by draw for the cape breton island area only. Approx 12,000 entries each year. I have never been drawn and get my moose fix in NL. There is no priority system and you can reapply after 5 years if you are successful. If you are a status indian, no limit, no closed season. A lot of moose get shot by guys accompanied by a carded indian. Steve

Another handy item is a snatch block and a very long rope.
I'm also looking into making one of those "Newfie Moose Sleds" out of plastic 45 gallon drums .
That being said I've chopped up a lot of moose into carrying size bundles using nothing more than a knife and an axe . As I get older the bundles keep getting smaller . Much better with an ATV.
