I've been beginning the investigation of hunting New Zealand for Thar and/or Chamois. It seems as though prices are fairly reasonable, but also one could potentially do a self-guided hunt over there. In any event, my time frame would be July/August. I know these are the winter months, but I'm curious to know from others who have hunted over there, what kind of conditions I'd be looking at up in the mountains.

Thanks for any input!

As far as info about hunting in NZ goes, I can't imagine a better resource than Nathan Foster.

Join his forum and ask whatever you like. I am sure he will help as much as possible. If I had the time and money to go there, I would definitely hire him as a guide!

Also, don't miss his Ballistics Studies knowledge base. It is incredible! (Based on the shooting of over 8000 head of game in NZ!!!)

We hunted with Gerald Telford a few years ago and both took great tahr as well as several other critters including chamois. It was a 100% free-range hunt. They are some steep/nasty mountains on the south Island. Gerald is as good of a mountain hunter as I've shared a camp with.
