Hunting Newbie! Help?

Hey everyone,

Brand new to hunting, got my small game licence today, and i'm looking forward to the upcoming Goose Season and Deer season. (i'm in Ontario)

However I'm hoping i can get some advice on the whole thing.
I understand the WMU's and the Migratory Game districts, but where do i go to find info on where to hunt within those regions?
Am i supposed to find public land and go shooting away on days when the season is open?

How do i get information, and how do i get started? I'm seriously new, so any and all help would be very appreciated.

First off welcome to hunting. Go to a post office and buy your migratory birds license. Then you have to get permission from someone who owns land to hunt there preferrably a pond or a field where they are. When you have done all that grab a call and some decoys and time to go..lol you will need a modified choke, and high speed steel rounds.
MOST IMPORTANT!!!!!!! BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN!!!!!! Always respect the land and dont become a douchebag poacher.

Better still, find a partner that knows all about that stuff. With a little luck, he'll have a SUV, a boat, a canoe, an ATV, lots of guns, ammo, a camp and assorted other gear, be gracious, generous ... and maybe even have a great looking sister !

Good partners ARE harder to find than good wives.

Well, being a guy, I don't douche, and i won't be poaching. Thanks for the advice! I guess i'll have to start knocking on doors

Wow, that sounds like the way to go. I'm a bit old for the hunter apprentice program, ie. 24. Maybe i'll get lucky at the range and meet some good hunting folks

Welcome to the sport!

The 3rd stickey on the hunting forum is called "Mentoring". Have a look there and you might find someone willling to take you out and show you the ropes.

That's the best way to do it. Ask around too, try to meet some farmers. Ask if they need help with pest control, most of the farmers I know always want me to come shoot coyotes threatening their cattle or clean some of the pigeons off their barns.

Yea, thats exactly what i'm hoping will happen.
 
When you get permission to hunts somebodies land dont forget to say thanks,bottle of whiskey or something helps to start a good relationship.
 
Hunting is a year round activity. To be a successful hunter you need to be aware of your surroundings. When you are in the bush now you will be picking up on a lot of things you may not have paid attention to before even if you are not actually hunting. You have to learn to slow down out there. Day to day life is pretty frenetic but leave that pace behind when you hit the bush. If you don't everything will just wait until after you crash by. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips, this is definatley one of the reasons I feel so compelled to hunt. I live in toronto, work at a marketing company and everything is going so fast, we don't use our minds or bodies the way that we used to. I'm looking forward to slowing down, paying attention to the outdoors, and finding that perfect buck.

Being in T.O. , you might want to consider joining a Gun Club ... something like Oshawa or Uxbridge or even Barrie.
The Trap & Skeet set are typically hunters, as a are a good portion of the guys using the rifle ranges.
You'll get to learn & practice - and may just meet-up with a couple of other guys that share your interests.

Thanks for the suggestion, any experience with silverdale? by the looks of their website they're pretty good for rifle ranges.

Oshawa also looks interesting, i'm looking for rifle as well and Uxbridge's website dosen't seem to list that.

Thanks very much! I'm actually at work this weekend, but I'm hoping to get out there in the next couple weeks. If the offer still stands, and you're around on sundays, it'd be great to meet you. Just waiting for my .223 rifle, scope and dies to arrive in the mail.

I actually know no one who participates in shooting sports. One family member, but he lives up in Red Lake, so that's not much help!
