How do you get the first 5 or 6 to stand still so you get the gun sighted in?
First walk away or towards the deer until you are at 100 yards. Then its Easy, you just aim for a certain hair and then when you look at your entrance hole you determine how many clicks to move your scope. Of course if you hit the hair you are watching then you know your rifle is dead on.
In order of importance for hunting gear though is. CORE licence, PAL if you havnt got someone to hunt with, Boots built for the worst case scenerio climate, binoculars, Rifle, ammo, knife, proper layers with rain gear.
All the other things to have are nice though too. A range finder will stop you kicking yourself at some point. A pack frame because you need to get the animal out. A digital camera so you have memories of some of the cool stuff you have seen. A day pack to carry your knife, rangefinder, compass, camera, tags, extra ammo (because sometimes a clip isnt enough), and some calls.
The one thing that people really seem to love is a GPS. I have put off buying one because I think that my iphone with google earth is ahead of it. A lot of people seem to think they are the greatest thing though, and for doing some hiking in unknown territory it is a great idea.
Hunting isn't cheap to get into, most people under 23 have a hard time scraping up enough doe to even get their CORE. Let alone the cost for 3-4 tags, a box of ammo, gas to get where youre going, and boots and binos.
I took out a guy for his first big game animal again, and after we bought him some binos from costco (bushnells - absolute crap - have to cross your eyes to be able to focus them) and he wore some coton pants and old boots which didnt fit. He came to the realization that what I was telling him about boots and binos are more important than a gun. He is now returning the binos and going to upgrade to nikon monarchs, and find some decent warm boots that arnt from his childhood, as well as some waterproof and quiet hunting pants that dont swoosh. Deer could hear us for miles.
He still had a great time and though we didnt get one, we got up close to some big 3x3's and a lot of does, he even would have had a shot at a lynx in an open season, but he didnt buy the tag, that was $8.
