OVA SCOTIA is one of just two provinces — with P.E.I. — that forbids hunting on Sundays.

Unlike the Liberals, however, we’re just fine with that.

Liberal natural resources critic Andrew Younger says his party will be introducing legislation to repeal that ban. The reason? The rule is archaic and unnecessary, possibly costing the province millions in revenue lost to more hunter-friendly nearby provinces.

Proponents also say allowing them to hunt on Sundays would help bring more young people into an activity that has been losing participants.

With respect, that logic is flawed for a number of reasons.

Although it’s true that there don’t seem to be more hunting accidents involving non-hunters in places where Sunday hunting is allowed, that’s not the point.

The reality is that when hunters are in the woods, non-hunters tend to avoid going there. There’s an economic cost to that non-use, as well.

As for involving more youth in hunting, it’s not government’s responsibility to set policy to encourage or discourage participation.

In any case, despite a majority of provinces allowing at least limited Sunday hunting — and all but seven states in the U.S. doing the same — our understanding is that hunting is still in decline.

Hunters argue that everyone else gets to use the woods 11 months of the year, so they should have full weekends (along with the entire work week) to hunt in the one month left. Except, of course, for the fact that no other activity excludes other users like hunting does.

Why should non-hunters have to avoid the woods entirely, seven days a week, during hunting season? Telling non-hunters they’ll be fine if they wear hunter orange is insulting. People have a right to be concerned about being in the woods when firearms are being used.

Hunters complain their activity is being singled out for restrictions. Well, yes. Their activity involves firearms, which can kill.

Nova Scotia, unlike most other provinces, is mainly — 70 per cent — privately owned. Farmers and woodlot owners should have one day free of concern about gunfire.

The rest of us would like a day to enjoy the fall outdoors, too.

I call BS on this one. I'm not a hunter but how long is the season anyway? Hunter works all week and for his troubles gets to hunt only on Saturday? Hunters put money in the pockets of government which in turn puts it into (hopefully) wildlife research. I don't think a walk in the woods costs anything. Surprised the Liberals are for Sundays tho,

There are plenty of parks and non hunting areas where you can enjoy the outdoors.

A hunter who works 9-5 M-F, with a 2 month hunting season has about 10 days a year to hunt if no Sunday hunting is allowed.

General season for Deer goes from October 28-December 3.Yeah the money from this goes to DNR officers and wildlife management of course, courses and programs etc.

Maybe people need a licence to go into the woods so they can help pay for all the services they use, just like the hunters.

In nature does the prey get a day off ?We have finally been able to hunt Sundays in AB for about 5 years now despite the ranting and raving.Like those that vowed they'd never shop on Sundays. The malls are packed. If it offends you don't go out.........Easy as that! Harold...........some only have weekends to hunt

Just started a few years ago here in SK. and the sky didn`t fall in. I don`t really care one way or the other i`m self employed and if my work is caught up i go out. Works well for guys that work mon thru fri.

That's how we got it allowed here. Had a local hunter in his late 80's who went before council and explained how his only son worked 6 days a week and they couldn't hunt together anymore.

I think this paper is taking it's points from that ultra-lefty blog that was linked here last week.
Full of comments about knuckle-dragging and wife beating.:(

The part that doesn't make sense is if it's private land. Sure if they don't want to make it 7 days all around, but at least have it 7 days if private and on crown land 6 days. They can't argue against that, it's private land and they shouldn't be in those bushes anyways to ''enjoy'' nature.

No. The owners should have 7 days a week free of hunters and gore-tex-wearing-energy-water-drinking-bird-watching-pinko trespassers, not one.

They should also have 7 days a week of doing whatever they want on their own goddamn land.

Only on this website would someone get bashed for wanting to promote hunting and do away with a ridiculously outdated law, solely because he's a liberal. You guys crack me up sometimes.

The articles' title is "Liberals back bad idea", meaning whoever wrote the article thinks it's bad that the Libs. are in favour of Sunday hunting.

Call me for future reading comprehension lessons.:D;)

I'm quite surprised that the Liberals even mentioned such a thing to be honest, when was the last time ANY Liberal did anything for us that didn't have a hidden agenda?
Kinda makes me go "hmmmmm''

Sunday hunting costs nothing and makes them money. Bird watchers and art students don't spend money constantly and therefore don't matter to the big scheme. Hunters are taxed heavily.
If 70 percent is private land and the said landowner gives permission for hunters to hunt what's the problem? To many careless tresspassers? I work 5-6 days a week. I need sunday hunting gun and bow
