i've been putting the word out here and getting nowhere with finding a hunting/shooting partner.
i grew up in this area and moved back a couple of years ago.

i mostly chase birds, but i have taken deer.

when all is said and done i prefer small game hunting.

after hunting season i strap on my snowshoes and wander around with my dog under the guise of hunting rabbits.
my preference is the woods, i don't like road hunting.
lots of bush around here, lots of critters.

i am also big into black powder ... traditional style rifles, but i don't really care what my parner shoots wrt rifles.
just have to be safe and no booze til the hunt is over and guns put away.

i really enjoy range work. i am in the dauphin area.

knowledge of obscure rifles and cartridges would be a boon.:D

pm me if you are interested. btw i am retired.

cheers
and have a good christmas.

Hello!

It sounds like we have a number of things in common. It is too bad we're not a couple hours closer. I'm a little over 30mins south of Portage la Prairie.

I love chasing critters with my old rifles (mainly all single shots) and SxS shotguns. I too have been looking for bunnies this year, toting an old Stevens Favorite. Love shooting black powder too, either in my flinter or in various cartridge rifles (sharps, rolling blocks etc.).

I love shooting off the bench testing loads and ringing gongs. I shoot mostly all cast bullets for that. Building up a 32/40 on a rolling block action and a .22lr on a Stevens 44 this winter. Hope to get at least one ready for the spring!:D

Maybe in the new year if things work out we could plan a bunny hunt? Not much at all for bush rabbits around here though. There are jacks but they are hard to get close to but worth it when you get one as I find them very good eatin'!

Best Regards,

Darryl

a 32/40 on a rolling block?? sounds sweet ... are you setting it up for scheutzen or for hunting?

i have a haenel AYDT in 8.15x something ... european eqivalent of a 32/40. nice rifle ... reasonably accurate.

the old stevens favourites are a nice little rifle too. i looked at the new ones but there was no magic.

i had a 44/40 in a stevens 44 1/2 but just used pyrodex in it. action seemed a bit weak. sold it or swapped it years ago.

south of portage? any turkeys around there??

dauphin gun show is in april.

keep in touch

cheers

Yup, 32-40 on a #1 rolling block action. It's intended mainly for bench shooting and maybe some off hand. I've fitted a 32" by 1.125" full octagon barrel so it's going to be heavy... Especially after fitting my 16 power Unertl! I may try some offhand schuetzen but the stocks are just straight and not set up for such.

I have seen the odd AYDT at some gun shows. Do you breech seat your bullets for it or just shoot fixed ammuniton? Looks like they make for great offhand work.

Oh my friend... turkeys we do have around here:D! Just saw a "herd" of about 20 last week. Can't wait till spring to chase them with one of my old doubles. I just bought a farm here this fall and it is in a great turkey area, deer for that matter too!

How is the Dauphin gun show? Any old stuff ever show up? I may have to make the trip, I have a buddy who just moved up there between Camperville and Dauphin. Could be a good excuse for a visit!

Hope your Christmas was a good one!

Type soon,

Darryl

I know that the name lingers on from my residence I lived in the 'Peg. Now at Russell and watch out next year when I go out for "jumpers". Love this part of the province as I was raised here til 16 and recently returned after 46 years away. I am finally HOME again. Getting to know the areas that I can hunt, does take time. But anxious to try my Winny 25-35 once again.

dauphin gun show?

there's usually some good stuff there. i had been looking for winchester 52s and there was a couple one year.

16Xunertyl sounds very sweet... will work well for your rifle.
i just roll the ammo, not breach set it. i'm not that much into scheutzen style and i like to shoot lots.

i have a tasco RTB scope on it for loads, but prefer the irons i jury rigged on it.

25/35 is a pretty classic jumper round isn't it? good for woods.
