There is some Crown Land near Guelph, but it's infested with hikers, picnickers and other riff-raff. Any other land is owned by somebody. A lot of whom are commuters from TO/Hazelville(that'd be Mississauga) and are frightened of firearms in general and hunters in particular.
Your best bet is to join The Guelph Rod and Gun or any other shooting club. Eventually, you will be invited to go hunting.

There are lots of farming around that, go out and drive around n ask people. You will not miss a hunting chance in that area.
Or there are few forest tracs, go buy the yearly membership and start hunting.

The Credit River Conservation Authority manages the crown parcels around Guelph/Fergus... you have to join the OFAH and then pay a $60 annual fee to hunt all game seasons... they provide you with a parking tag for your vehicle and a map showing all of the multi-use crown parcels... the hunting can range from poor to good depending on the parcel and quarry... but this will get you started.

In a similar boat as you, albeit In a different part of the country, I met some of my first (and one lasting) hunting partners by attending conservation group dinners (DU, DELTA waterfowl, etc...).
