My wife is considering a job in Prince George, BC and we're discussing the possibility of moving out there from Ontario. I'm wondering what kind of big game there is to hunt there and how the licensing system works out there for tags on big game.

It would be along way from our family but I think it could be worth the opportunity for her and also the hunting opportunity for me. How is the gun club in Prince George?

I'm looking forward to hearing your advice.

Best regards,

Slooshark1

there is pretty good gun club here. their website is www.pgrgclub.com
$75/yr for a family membership.

I moved out here from ontario last summer as well. while it's a kinda of a big change it's not to bad and you get used to it. when you first get here you'll notice that it kinda stinks (pulp mills) but after awhile you dont notice it any more.

as far as tags etc go. you have to get your "resident hunter number card" after you get that you can go to any sporting goods store and buy a hunting license, then you can buy your tags witch get a attached to it.

you have to be a resident of BC for 6months before you can get your resident hunter number though.

as Boo said there is lots of good hunting around here. there is also Elk here if you wanna try that. although only on private land.

(I'll take a couple pics of the current range next time im out there for ya)

there is no contest. hunting in this are is about a million times better then ontario.

put it this way. I would rather eat todbartell's still warm puke then hunt in ontario again :D

HUH? there is open season 6pt or better season all over region 7. crown land. been that way for a few years now.

well thats what I was told. maybe they meant that around the PG area there isnt any crown land to hunt Elk on who knows, but regardless thats what was told to me.

ya I just looked it up and apparently, it's the LEH elk draw thats restricted to private land. the Open season is not. I belived the guy who told me that it was only on prvate land because I had read something similar somewhere and apparety I read it in the LEH synopsis so thus the confusion.

and i wasnt told that by some one at work. but yes I do here more like 99.9% BS from people everyday so I do get good at ignoring it lol

there are no animals in BC

PG has a new 1000 yard range about to be completed

it's been "about to be completed" since I moved here last year lol ive heard mixed ideas on how much more it needs and how far it is done. Ive heard that theyre just putting the finshing touches on it and Ive heard that they are not even finshed logging it yet. so I dunno whats truth or not. (these are from the more senior members of the club by the way)

lol ya I get around. plus I work In shooting/hunting/fishing store so i here all sorts of stuff from talking to people. plus my father is president of the kinsmen club so I hear lots of crap about all sorts of stuff happening around here. plus my father vulonteers at the gun club events sometimes so I hear things. not always true but usually has some truth to it. I also volunteer at pagara every now and then so I meet lots of interesting people and hear lots of diffrent stuff. I also talk with people when I go to the range etc etc etc etc. (thats why i try not to say something is fact and I say someone told me, or I heard...... because I dont really know if it's true or not)

I feel like taking a drive out to the new range to see for myself how well things are going cause there is lots of conflicting ideas on how well it's coming.

To buy a moose tag or elk tag, do you have to apply into a draw or just walk into a store and buy a tag over the counter? Are there any Grizzly bears around PG? Is there a season on them? Are there whitetails and mulies around too? How about licenses for them? Over the counter? In Ontario, we have to apply into a draw and it's like winning the 649 to get to go hunting (pretty lame).

Sounds like a great idea. In the last few days I've run into a bunch of your posts on this board, and all have been based on misinformation and heresay....

(Mulie Non-Res thread comes to mind and this thread as well).

In the next few months you'll be asked a ton of questions as you stand behind the gun counter by hunters that will likely take the information you give them (many without even double checking the regs).

Just a friendly suggestion that you become a little less "misinformed" when it comes to the BC Hunting Synopsis... if not - maybe consider handing out a little less free "advice".

Well the regs are frickin confusing. They say one thing then further in they say thats not really true. trust me ive read the regs a bunch of times but with some things they are so contradictory thats it's difficult to navigate through the BS. and as far as this thread goes, I made a mistake. it happens, It was the LEH i was talking about not the open season so I had diffrent info. simple mistake. and since im new to BC i dont really "just know" things. I have to look it up and like I said the regs can be confusing when you actually take what they like it what they mean lol. Most the "free advice" i give that ends up being wrong is based on facts just since im not the sharpest tool in the shead i sometimes get things messed up.

there is an open season and an LEH draw. LEH stands for limited entry hunting and is similar to the draw in Ontario. The open season you can just walk into the store buy your tags and go hunting.

lots of whitetails and mulies around here. don't know about Grizzlies though.

there are lots of Grizzly bears around PG if you know where to look. they are LEH only.

the hunting out here is very very different. if hunting in a rugged landscape, without fences, private land, or treestands, where if you choose you can go a week without seeing anybody apeals to you, I suggest you make the move :D

you can take 2 deer, 2 bears, a moose, an elk and some small game all in one season, without an LEH within a short drive of PG.
