Hunting rabbits with pointer?

If a GWP is in your thoughts, there is a Drathaar breeder in newfoundland.
Drahthaars have the same origins as a GWP, but they are still bred to european hunting standards. It makes a huge difference in natural ability. I learned that lesson after attending some NAVHDA and retriever trials. Apparently versatile has a diluted meaning to some. I was scolded for using my Drathaar to hunt geese, pheasants and raccoons the day before I put him in the NAVHDA trial. I probably burned some bridges sending him in to pick up the birds the CKC Grand Champions missed.

Where in NFLD?

I have family there, and occasionally ride through there for work. Would be interested to see what's what, next time I'm on the rock.

Both my old GWP and my DD “tongue” when they move a rabbit. The GWP was pretty vocal actually. As hard as they tried, there wasn’t much success in catching any. I didn’t usually shoot either, only because I just enjoyed the show.

As a kid on the farm occasionally a big jack would leisurely skip through the yard. About the time you'd forget about it, along would come ole' Sport (std lab/heinz57 black/white farm dog), "hot on it's heels" about 5 minutes later.

Thread just made me think of that.

Been reading about the versatiles the last few days. GWP is definitely the dog that has the most attributes for what I need. I'm an on-foot hunter for everything but deer, where I'm not allowed to use a dog anyway. Alas. They're a pricey breed, and no breeders around here.

Having read through the thread op, you're looking for a Drahthaar. Pup cost ~$1,500 and they are worth every penny of that. Very few other dogs come with the same pedigree or hunting drive. Many will argue the fact, but it's hard to beat the German system they have in place for the Drahthaar.

Have a look at the parents of the pup we are hoping to get in July. I didn't want to jinx it by mentioning anything, the whelping date is early May and fingers crossed being 3rd in line we will get a pup. I'd like our pup to have a tighter heavier coat than my current Drahthaar Nos.

Pedigree is worth paying for! These dogs HUNT!

Agree 100% Jay. Where is your next DD from? Looks like Adam’s dam. I just got another GWP pup. Good dogs also exist in the NAVHDA side, you just need to be selective.

You caught that did you Dilly? Yes, Britta is expecting... Male is Lord.

Cheers
Jay

Don't forget to email, call, write, fb message etc, our current provincial minister in charge of the DNR Mike Holland and put pressure on him to amend legislation allowing the use of dogs for blood trailing big game. Even if they have to be leashed. I know currently its kind of a grey area with some officers having no issue with or even encouraging a hunter to use one and others being very quick to charge for it. I know just about any dog can turn an unrecovered or all day search into a short trail and recovery with a little encouragement. Dogs are a conservation tool.

I'm from NB and hunted there. I just checked NB right now and you do not need a special license to hunt rabbits with a dog. You do need a license if you are going to hunt raccoon, fox and bobcat.

Here in NB, the rules are pretty much useless and frustrating for anyone who wants to get a hound. You can do it, sure, but you need a government licence. Total pain in the neck. Was wondering if a pointer might be a good substitute for rabbit hunting. Would probably suit my hunting style better anyway.

Interesting. Did you call DNR, or just check the book?

The Act says:

"Dogs
48(1)Every person commits an offence who at any time allows a dog to run at large in a resort of wildlife.
48(2)Subsection (1) does not apply to a person who is
(a) using a dog for hunting game birds during the open season for game birds, or
(b) carrying out an activity involving the dog under and in accordance with a permit issued to the person under subsection 33(3) or 33.2(1).
1997, c.1, s.14; 2008, c.49, s.10"

I and others have always taken that to mean you can use a dog to hunt birds with no licence, but other activities need permits. You certainly need a permit for trials.

The way I read this is your hunting license counts as your permit. That's is all we require 30 years ago.

Olie Molie.

Gosh I hope not, but it is likely he will... Ugh

Here is Britta with the litter she had on May 5th. All pups are dark brown with a white chest patch like Lord, the exception being one female pup that is white with big brown spots. The white will turn roan at about 3 weeks of age. A very nice litter of 5 male & 2 female pups.
