Hunting Rifle: Remington vs Tikka .....

I'm a M-70 fan and have been since . . . well for a long time, but you do know that the new ones made by FN are manufactured in deepest darkest South Carolina right?

I did know that... brain farted on the new production Winchester 94's et al being made by Miroku in Japan...

Brain farts are becoming a more common occurrence for me... I wonder what that is all about??? ;)

Very much doubt you'll get any new scoped rifle for $700. Used maybe. Mind you, used isn't a horrible thing. It takes a great deal of abuse to damage a modern hunting rifle.
You want a long action or short? .270 uses a long action, the .308 a short. This is not a major decision or a deal breaker by any means. It's only a half inch.
I'd be thinking .270 or .308 before a .243. More versatile. You can kill any game you care to hunt with either of the former just by changing the bullet used. Not so much with a .243.
Don't discount other cartridges. Any of the 24, 25, 26 or 27 calibres will do. Do not opt for something new or very odd though. Like jaydog says, if you can't find it in small places, it's not for you.
Don't worry about factory triggers. All factory firearms require a trigger job.

$700 for a rifle and scope, for deer. Used, you might find a Rem for that, but I highly doubt you'll find a used X-Bolt or Tikka. A new Savage 11/111 or 12 may be a good choice for you (Hoyt says stay away from the Savage Axis and I agree.) Buying an older, marked up, quality rifle, that still has good rifling and functions well, topped with a new or used $250ish scope, is the way I would go. I'll stay out of the caliber debate........2........7........0.......;) Actually, 270, 308 and .30-06 are all great and used rifles in these calibers are super common. Let us know what you end up with:)

For what it's worth, I have owned literally over 100 Rem 700s and have hunted over most of the globe including dangerous game in several places and countries with 700 Rems and I have NEVER, ABSOLUTELY NEVER been let down by my choice in rifles. The triggers are still fully adjustable by those competent in doing so and the out of the box accuracy is and always has been second to none. Caliber is, as always, a matter of personal choice, so I'm not going to advise there, 308, 270, 280, 30-06..........all fine hunting choices.
I have been betting large sums of money (cost of overseas hunts) and many times my life on 700 Rems for more than 30 years now.........outcome has been 100%, my recommendation hands down.

Remington 700 fan too .. although I own a few less than c-fbmi !
Also like pre-64 Mod. 70 Winchesters and the new Mod. 70's, but no matter what, it's always wood & blue.
Not a fan of the current Tikkas or Sako's, but do like the older Sako AV's.

I've managed to shoot deer and moose with the 270, 308 and 30-06. Not much to choose between, but I do have a
bit of a soft spot for the 270.

I own more Remington 700,s than anything else, I also choose them for projects.
BUT
The Remington's are so poorly made it is laughable, very high percent chance there is going to be something that needs fixing right out of the box. Probably the trigger, and bedding as a minimum. Other likely problems, base holes that are crooked, stock screws too long, barrels machined crooked and touching one side of the bbl channel, little to no extraction camming due to bolt handle being put on wrong, short actions that wont feed, oversized firing pin holes, only one bolt lug making contact... and the list goes on and on... add to all this absolutely no accuracy testing or guarantee and you get lots of turds sitting on the store shelves.

Then there's the Tikka, a couple people complained about the recoil lug being to soft one time....and that's about it. Very well put together, very accurate, extremely small chance there is going to be something wrong with it.

I HAVE NEVER OWNED A REMINGTON THAT DID NOT HAVE ISSUES
I HAVE NEVER OWNED A TIKA THAT HAD AN ISSUE

And that about sums that up...

New model Tikka out of the box beats new model Remmy out of the box, plus or minus five percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Put me in the Remington camp, as well. Never had one that failed to deliver, and I own quite a few.

The new Vanguard S2 is worth a look, though.

Tikka....an older one is a great purchase, the T3 I cannot learn to love, despite the fact that most are accurate.

The diatribe above, by Republic of Alberta, is quite misleading to any neophyte, so take it with a grain of salt.

Regards, Dave.

As you can see, There is lots of advice. In the end it will boil down to your own personal preference and experiences. You may have to try a few, but the right one will come. As long as its in .270!!!!

I have all 3. First was rem 700, xbolt second, tikka last. Like them all but favorite is xbolt.

Rem in 300winmag
Xbolt in 300winmag
Tikka in 30-06

I've had both. T3 Tikkas and several M700s. Only one M700 223 remains and all that is left from the factory parts are a trued receiver/bolt body... I like all guns mostly, but neither of these would rank as my favourites... ;)
