Hi Guys,
My favorite hunting rifle,
Marlin cowboy 1895 in 45/70 govt, Jm stamp.
I shoot hard cast lead bullets 500gr.
I took a lot of game with this, including a deer this fall.

Please do........I've been thinking of trying the hard cast as well......very curious.

Gary, what do you do to keep barrel leading in check? Just keep velocity below a certain level?

Provided gas checks are used, leading with cast bullets is typically light, to nonexistent, even with light bullets and high velocity loads. In order to prevent leading you must choose a bullet diameter large enough to to form a good gas seal that prevents gas cutting, and the quality of the bullet lube cannot be overemphasized. Velocity only becomes a leading issue if the rifling twist is fast for caliber, resulting in the bullet stripping, and a extreme fouling. I discovered this with my 1:8 .30 caliber barrel, and found that velocity could not exceed 1200 fps, so I simply chose not to shoot cast in that rifle.

Agree on the Gas checks. I was running GC cast ( From Rusty Wood ) through a 375 WM and it worked quite well. The velocity was in the neighborhood of 2000 IIRC.
My load journal is at home and the rifle turned into a 'Grad Dress' last fall...but it would push them out pretty quick.
