Hunting Rifle

IMHO find a gun that you like, fits you well and is at a price you are happy with; all the popular hunting calibers are totally fine.

It's just a huge :jerkit: debating the differences between all the usual hunting calibers. Buy gun you love in any reasonable caliber (.30-06, .270, .308, .300 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, .270 WSM, .300 WMS, .25-06, .260 Rem, 7mm-08 ect) and it will be available in a wide range of loads to suit amongst any need. And you will be a lot happier in the long run.

Hi i am new to Canadian Gun Nutz. I am looking for a new hunting rifle that i intend to use for bear, moose and elk. I was considering a 7mm, 338 mag or a 300 win mag. Any suggestions? I would like to hear your comments and opinions.

Thanks, eberle13

Any of 'em will work for what you want to hunt. Find a rifle that has the options that suit you and fits you well. Install some decent quality optics & you're good to go.

Me personally, I'd go .300 Win Mag as that's what I have of the three & load for it as well. Mines on a Browning Abolt composite stalker, B&L Elite 4000 2.5-10x40mm scope. Loves 70 grains IMR 4350 behind a good quality 180 gr JHP.

NAA.

Out of the options that you gave, I'm a .338 WM fan. I was just at the range a couple of hours ago shooting my .338WM Sako, and my .444 Marlin. I like the heavier bullet weight options. Like many of the guys have said, start by picking a rifle make and model that you like the feel and look of. That choice alone may limit your cartridge options and help to make the decision for you. Don't go cheap on the optics. You'll want long eye relief in a rugged package.
Good luck and happy hunting!

I prefer the .300 Win Mag myself of those 3. Otherwise, I'd pick a .30-06 since it'll still do everything out to about as far as I have any business shooting.

All or 90% of where I hunt is not long range. I hung up my 300 winmag for a 450 Marlin and never looked back. Any of those three others are great, but you gotta be able to shoot confident to. If its your first gun I say get like a 308 and practice alot become a good shooter first. 308 will fullfil your needs no problem.

I am pretty much exclusively shooting my .444 marlin these days. Just so comfy with a levergun, but so much power for anything. I'd rather "overkill" something, than be underpowered. Big bullets at moderate speed over small bullets at fast speed for me lately.
But off that list you said I'd go .338wm. I just recently sold my .338wm due to financial reasons, and I really miss it. It was a super performer, and game getter. Again, big bullets, just somewhat faster.

I always kind of cringe at noobies wanting magnums as their first gun. It's the perfect way to develop a bad flinch and make you a lousy shot right from the start. Then you have to unlearn all your bad habits; which some will never do.

Have you shot any of these and can you hit your targets without closing your eyes, grinding your teeth and yanking the trigger?
