Agreed but he is new and a ffp scope is like $1500

A 3x9 bushnell will do fine but if you want to use mil dots correctly so you can shoot accurately with confidence at any distance in the fly.. A fixed zoom mil dot scope is what u want.

Sightron sells the best one on the market for the price. $600.



Like said still, a 3x9 normal scope will do u fine.
 
I have a couple of Leupold VX-2's in 2x-7x with the LR reticle on a .257 and on a 25-06.
Very compact, lightweight and more than enough optical & mechanical quality to suit me.
 
Redfeild 4-12X40 gets my vote as well... I use that scope on my .270 deer gun.

Thank you again for the great replies. I have come to a conclusion so feel free to continue the conversation, but just to update I am going to get a redfield, either 3 9 or 4 12, and I'll give their accu range reticle a try since so many experienced people are recommending it. I am glad that I won't be breaking the bank on this one, so my wife thanks you too!
 
Using you $0 - $1000 guideline gives you considerable latitude.
What one likes and what you might like will vary so until you have had the opportunity to try a number of scopes on various rifles, even if just looking through.
With each opportunity, make some writen notes, perhaps a picture, and an accurate description or each piece.
Your current .223 may bring forth considerable enjoyment so that you will elect to buy another rifle, and then another scope.
Spending too much on the first scope may leave you destitute when buying your second scope so $400 on number one will leave you a good bankroll for the second.
Some of my rifles have duplicates and far be it for me to suggest I am right and the others are wrong.
 
Where you are hunting you may not think this scope is relevant but I thought I would throw it out there.

Another option would be a Bushnell Elite 10x40 with the mildot reticle and dials. This scope is about $250 and currently has a manufacturers rebate of $75 until the end of December. Hunting dogs on the open prairies I found I always had my scope set at 10x or 12x. So the fixed 10x made sense. It is simple and I never have to worry about shifting my point of impact. The mildot reticle has its many advatages as listed and coupled with a fixed power it is easy to utilize as aiming points.

I prefer dialing elevation adjustments. The accuracy of the dials seems to be right up there with other higher end scopes. I have a Tikka T3 223 with a 1in8 twist. This scope coupled with 80gr Bergers is an inexpensive option for long range plinking. It is one of the cheaper scopes I own, but one of the most used!

An added note: For smart phone users check out the "iSTRELOK" app. Its a cheap ballistics calculator which has alomost every reticle you can think of and provides your output info in relation to the reticle you have choosen.
 
Hey Adam, Taylor here. For your old X-bolt 270 WSM which I use for moose/deer, I ended up with a Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 with BDC reticle, and I couldn't be happier. I would not hesitate to use this out to 300+ meters on any critter. I picked mine up used (actually just mounted) on the longrangehunting dot com forum for around $350 out of the states. Very clear glass, great light gathering and I actually like the reticle quite a bit:

If you haven't picked one out yet and want any more feedback, feel free to PM me. For the price range, I'm not sure you can get a better scope. According to the guy at Epps they are a bit difficult to get in Canada though, could be BS.

I miss that 270 short mag...dont miss paying for ammo though!

I ended up getting a redfield 4-12 accurange reticle at SAIL today for 264 out the door! They have a special on redfield's right now and no hst on any hunting stuff!

Thanks all for the help, I look forward to getting her out in the field!
 
Loopy VX3 with the varmint reticle, consistent, repeatable, takes abuse well. I haven't had a leupold yet that didn't pass a box test perfectly, I can not say the same for many scopes that cost the same or less.
