I would never put a variable that starts out at 6X on a hunting rifle. If you want to set up some kind of sniping rifle where your shots are starting out at 100 yds plus then go for it. There are so many comprimises problems with a large scope for me I don't know where to start:
1) Weight, your rifle will feel very top heavy, if you have a heavy recoiling rifle you are going to need very good mounts, or your scope will probably creep forward.
2) The higher the power the bigger the tube and objective will need to be in order to transfer enough light to your eye.
3) Do you want to be dicking with parallax adjustments on a hunting rifle?
4) Cost. All things being equal the more power the more $$.
5) Loss of field of view up close, where are the majority of your shots, under 200yds I bet, even in open areas. 2nd last moose I shot was at 190yds and was handily shot with scope still on 2X.
My top choice for a variable scope in a hunting rifle that covers short to long shots, is very bright, lightweight, durable is a Leupold VX III 2.5 X 8, it is a scope that will last you a lifetime. Not sure what your price range is, but even if you've got tons of cash it is still the scope I would get, and if it is too expensive wait for a good used one. Failing that go with a 3200 3 X 9.
Good luck
