Hunting/Shooting, Myths and Misconceptions

You will ruin your shotgun if you shoot slugs through a full choke. There is a PAL instructor around who STILL tells his students that.

I have seen two that had split barrels because of it.An Ithica/SKB semi 12g,and a Franchi 12g both caused from slug through full choke.

All the old timmers here believe round nose bullets kill better that pointed bullets

You also cant find a deer in a scope if its running in the bush.(for fields only).

Were you there when this happened or just heard the story? I've shot slugs through full chokes both fixed and tubes without problem.

Re: the blown barrels from slugs.
Sorry ... but those barrels were ABSOLUTELY not split by just shooting a modern factory slug through a regular full choke. Something else must have figured into the equation.
The only slug damaged full choke I have ever seen documented was 18 years ago... It was a Browning A-5 with a full choke shooting the ORIGINAL BRI SABOT 500's which were made specifically for cylinder bore. The box came with a warning about shooting them with a full choke. They sold the patent to Win/Olin and now the plastic sabots are made smaller in Diameter to safely pass through all full choke shotguns. JUST LIKE EVERY SHOTGUN SHELL SABOT AND SLUG MADE TODAY FOR COMMERCIAL USE!:dancingbanana:

I am heard tons and quite often the myths are coming out of the instructors mouths as well.
I can't think of any this minute but will post as soon as I do.

I'd rather not start slamming my brother safety instructors who do a heck of a job and are only human.....

x2

One of the reasons slugs (in a smooth barrle) are so inacurate is that they are designed to go thru a full choke. They rattle down the pipe untill they are swaged by the full choke. For the manufactures this is a liability issue and they would not make something that blew up every full choke out there

Just saying they are only human too and have made mistakes...

Like:
*FMJ bullets are illegal in Canada (maybe for hunting in some juristictions)
*You can only fire ammo matching the data stamp on the firearm (while good advice it is not true, such as .357/.38 etc.)
*Accelerators are illegal in canada
*Win 94's with 16" bbl are prohibited or restrcited...even know a guy who was charged with that one but fought it and won.

One of my hunting buddies is a CFSC instructor and he has a million of them that he has heard from others.

Now from hunters I have heard a few as well.

.22 is useless.... I bet I can stop one with my thumb (this coming from a 9 fingered man)
20 gauge is no good for... { insert various game animals here}

I am sure I have many more... I'll be back

what about putting tape over your muzzle will cause it to blow up.

Oh and my favourite.

GUNS CANT BE SHOT UNDER WATER!!!!!!

Is there is an underlying message here that you are trying to tell us that you are only human?
I thought Captain Deadly was an omnipresent deity.

How about:

"Rifled slug barrels have greater range than smooth bores".

and this one from big bore low velocity advocates.

"High velocity bullets used on bison are spinning to fast and actually ball-up and get stopped by the hide."

From the same thread, Foxer also said ........

I shoot rifled slugs through my smooth " full bore " 12 ga. and its dang acurate. If you shoot reg. slugs ( smooth ) which i would never do in my 12 ga. it can cause problems. I actually got in an arguement with a guy at a hunting place about this... i won.

to change the subject,
When i first started hunting as a young pup i was always told by the older guys ( dad uncle ect ) never shoot a moose in the marsh cuz it will taste musky. I now think this was because they didnt want to drag its butt outta the marsh

Hahaha.... when does a swamp-donkey NOT taste musky????:dancingbanana:

From a moose calling 33 RPM vinyl! (yes, shortly after breechloaders were invented) recording, by a nameless quebec hunting guide, i bought at LeBarons :

"If you shoot over water the magnetism in the water will attract the bullet"
"the heart of a moose has a stone in it"

from my brother in law

"if a moose sees a flashlight at night he will charge it. so if you see a moose apporaching throw the flashlight away and he'll follow it"

so I guess if you hang a few patio lanterns at the edge of the bush and wait till dusk you'll have your moose:rolleyes:

He doesn't hunt anymore and it's just as well since he used to dispatch wounded grouse by stepping on their wings and then shooting them in the head with a .410:eek:
