So, I have an older custom Mauser in .257 Roberts I'm thinking of using for a deer/moose gun. Was wondering what my options are for a set of sights for it. It is drilled and tapped for a scope mount, the barrel is a custom, not sure of the hole spacing, but would like to see if I can get some sort of open sight for it. It had a scope mounted previously(A Unertl BV20), and I do have other scopes I can use, but would prefer a good hunting sight.
Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance,

Aaron

I have a Williams reviever peep on a vz24 in 8x57.
I cannot believe how accurate it is.
The front is a blade.
Very nice set up, I shoot the 198gr prvi loads as my 8 mm plinker.

Edited for pics

Any chance you can send me a pic of that setup?
Thanks

Wow, that's a nice looking rig. Just have to make sure there are holes for it to mount, it's safe to assume those mount from the side?

Am assuming the mount holes will look like these ones on the receiver pictured here:

Yes looks like it would mount in those holes. I can't get an accurate measurement with the sight on but it's somewhere between 0.55-0.6" centre to centre

I was just browsing and seen a rifle quite similar to one I inherited a few years back,(30.06 though). It has a old side mount 4x weaver on it right now but came with a nice looking peep that I slid into place for a couple pictures for you.

My uncle developed some type of dementia, really fast acting and I never got the chance to ask again the exact place/person who made this rifle. I know it was made in the states, most likely earlier 50's, probably since the rebuild only had a box of rounds through it. Anyways, here's a couple pictures of the mount, pretty sure it reads Pachmayr Los Angeles USA.; the holes are 23/16th or 56mm center to center. If you would like another angle just let me know.

Very nice mount and vintage weaver scope. I haven't seen one like that. Gun looks in great shape too. Thanks for posting.
Here is an old Redfield mount on a Steyr Mauser I have.

So I got a set of based while at Epps awhile ago, tried mounting them and noticed that they don't seem configured for the 33-40 small ring action as they were listed in the book to fit the gun. The rear base only lines up with 1 hole, actually I think there is only one hole present for the rear, if memory serves correct. Front base mounts ok, but the bolt hits the rear base, preventing the bolt from closing.
Will post pics tonight.
