Hunting the highway

Ok, not FROM the highway.
Last year, when bow hunting at dumbdawg, and Fogduckers ranch, I saw quite a few deer, but, they always winded me.
This year I have a plan!
I figure I'll set up close to the highway, where a good trail runs along just back of the highway fence. Hopefully, the highway will be a distraction, maybe distraction enough for me to get in a nice pointy stick.

You probably know the rules better than I, but in BC a lot of larger highways are posted with "No hunting withint X hundred meters of the highway". Might want to make sure about that if it's an issue where you are.

i've bow hunting near a highway, my closest stand location was about 400m away and i quickly found out that it wasn't worth it. There is nothing more annoying than trying to listen to a deer that you haven't yet spotted with transports driving by. I did see some nice deer tho

Ive actually seen some of the biggest deer right close to highways and have heard they gather close to them to lick the salt in the winter. In theory it sounds true but am not sure if this is a fact or not??

This highway isn't terribly busy in the winter, and there is a bit of a berm along the fence to shield me from a bit of the noise, and prevent stray arrows from making themselves known to a vehicle.
Also, there's at least 6" of snow. That will muffle the noise even more.
As to hearing the deer, that usually doesn't happen anyway, as for one there is snow, and for two, the area appears to be an old apple orchard. Not to brushy.

Bob......hope you get that big bugger up there..theres a big doe and buck still on the loose up there...what do you have left for tags?
if the weather turn a bit crappy..head close to the cedar swamp

I don't know about the highway, but I've watched the elk lick road salt off my truck. Left the oddest looking little clean patches. - dan

Turned out to be a morning only hunt, and he played tag with me.
I walked out the drive from the camp. (everything is fine by the way) I parked my butt in the snow until I thought I'd never walk again because my feet where froze, so were my nuts! I was so damn cold I was shaking when I walked.
I walked out to find he'd followed my track down the drive! Where I turned right, he turned left.
SOB.
Lots of tracks around, about ten inches of snow, three of that fresh last night. So the tracks were very fresh.
