Hunting the Rain- rifle choice?

I have good experience with a Remington 7600 pump for ease of maintenance in wet conditions..trigger group, magazine removes easily for a spray down. and everything else is fairly accessible...no barrel channel to hide rust etc and a "pull through " cleans the barrel quickly

I cover muzzle with electrical tape or small lunch Baggie with tape, wipe the rifle down when I get back to camp or home with a dry soft rag, then I wipe down with a silicon cloth...remove bolt and wipe it too. Works great, no issues in my 17 plus years on some of my Sako m75 rifles. Rain snow, cold to -35C.
 
I had a Browning A-bolt stainless stalker that spent many an hour on the Wet Coast of Vancouver island and never had an issue.
But, when you compare the rain with the humidity I begin to scratch my head and wonder how that would play into the equation.
How do Leupold scopes fair in your neck of the woods Down Under?

I have a couple of beaters around just for when the weather is really nasty out
I also use the tape trick over the muzzle
During the Korean War they put condoms on the muzzle to keep the rain and mud out haahaa
But I would imagine the guy would look pretty silly walking around with a condom hanging off the end of his hunting rifle LOL

Same here. An old rifle that you don't like much.
Take some wax and rub the wood and steel. Electrical tape over muzzle, like carverk says.
Favourite rifles don't see much rain.
 
XCRII would be nice, but it still requires some maintenance. I myself like the wood stocks, and thats what I am purchasing. My grandfather had a ton of rifles and shotguns all wood stocks. He has had most of them since the 60's and 70's. They have been through rain and snow, Ontario humidity, to africa through all of the conditions there and back again. Not one gun of his shows rust or pitting, not a single stock is split. Take care of your guns and store them properly the only problems you will ever have are factory defects.

Oil up your shooter and go hunting.
Clean shooter and gun when you git yer arse home.
Sort of like getting worried about getting mud on your dirt bike?
 
When I go hunting I take a back up rifle. It is there in case I break my #1 (or someone else in the group has a rifle fail) but it is also there in case the weather is rain or heavy snow fall. I find that a scoped rifle is less effective in rain or heavy snow. I am always trying to keep the lenses clear.

For bad weather I carry a rifle with iron sights and a fluorescent front sight. It has been my experience that when I take a rifle indoors and wipe it down with a paper towel, the warmth will dry it out. If is is really wet, I take the action out of the stock to wipe it dry underneath. I use tape over the muzzle, or one of those little finger condoms.
 
Hunted in rain mist and humidity all my life. Sal####er on and in guns and more. SS guns are my choice because i am damn hard on them and never have a problem. Scopes on the other hand will fog on the outside and mess you up quite a bit. Takes a bit to find what will work for you in that aspect. Butler creek covers and the like dont for me.
 
The rain won’t hurt it. Just dry it and oil it well when you’re done. Rub it down with an oily rag before you go out too. If you’re really worried about it rub wax on the exposed metal parts. The wood will dry out fine. People hunted with wood/blued rifles for centuries without issue before gun companies convinced us all that we needed to buy a whole other gun for rainy days. Lol.

all very valid points, some times I like seeing my best rifles covered in water or snow and being used just as they should be. I do take the time to clean them off and keep them prepped for that type of use when they are being used in adverse weather.
