Hunting utility trailer ideas for a build

I wanted to bump this thread bc my plans have changed and I now have a different trailer to start with. I picked up a 26' travel trailer that someone had started to gut. The kitchen and common area remains and is in the nose of the rv. I'm left with a space about 12x8 at the back that I plan on using for a small shower, bunk beds and if I get carried away will have room to park 2 atvs. Just a little unsure about having that much weight behind the axles. It should be an interesting build.

Be sure to take before and after pics..
Looking forward to seeing your work.

Looking forward for some pics.

I might build one in the future and thought leaving the last few feet on the trailer to incorporate with a ramp for an atv.

Before you think of turning it into a toy hauler check to make sure the frame and floor are strong enough, a lot of travel trailers are built as light as possible

Hey, that looks exactly like my old flatbed I sold a few years ago. Went to borrow it back a few months ago and the guy said he sold it. Wish I had kept it. You can never have too many trailers.

There are two full length steel beams that will be right under the atv tires so I should be fine there but I do plan on opening the floor at the back anyway to do a bit of plumbing.

Back in the day a friend of mine and I put together a similar set up putting my 10 ft camper on his double axle flat bed trailer. Camper, two quads, gen and bbq all fit nicely. Built some storage racks for gear. Was a good setup for hunter hauling. - dan

I have seen similar, and it looked a good set up for a couple guys.

The one I saw had 4x8 plywood panels in the stake pockets on the front and sides of the camper, made a really secure storage area for the propane tanks, fuel, etc.
When the quads were off the trailer deck was the front porch, room for the BBQ, stove, and a couple comfy chairs.

Seemed a better idea than having several dedicated units.

Cheers

So I've been working on it a bit this spring. Plans changed once more as I found a bunch of hidden water damage after doing some demo in the rear of the trailer. I decided to have the last 4.5' of trailer as flat deck trailer and still have a rear door to drive one or possibly 2 atvs inside. Once I'm done the fold away beds it will easily sleep 3 and I will also be doing an outdoor shower/ portable toilet on the flat deck area. I have built the back wall but still haven't cut the doors in but the rough openings are framed in. Pics to follow. Photobucket is terrible these days.

Was gonna start a new thread to see what kind of custom built hunting trailers folks have put together or had put together.

Then I remembered this thread so a revival is on order!!
while my trailer I mentioned early in this thread is not finished, it has progressed and remained useable the entire time.
I hope to get the cap built and interior done before fall but that is coming fast

My trailer started out life as a 1978 OTTO , 4 person tent trailer LOL
I'll post some pics shortly of the progression from before and now.

1st modification from tent trailer to atv trailer...… was used like this and towed all over bc for a few years till I blew a tire going ice fishing and swapped it to a 3500lb princess auto axle and hub set.

and this is done in formed , 1 piece sheets of 16ga stainless steel for some added bear proofness :)
I added side structure out over the wheels that creates some internal storage areas and the beginnings of fold out sleeping sections.
It will have a camper heater installed and fully insulated. The cap will be an insulated and have a window shaker airconditioner on the front as well as a small generator for lights inside and running the AC and coolbot for using the trailer as a meat cooler.
My Yamaha grizzly will still roll right inside should I need it to haul the atv and once rolled out, the trailer turns into sleeping for 2.
here's pics of what she looks like right now.

I did the cargo trailer thing because I had one. I worked but it was not as comfortable as a proper trailer. For what it costs to customize the trailer to a proper level it’s just not worth it. But that’s just my two cents. I bought a toy hauler from kijiji for
A few grand and it has everything one can need and then some. Has a proper w/c kitchen bedding storage heat ac and so on. There are good deals on travel trailers and toy haulers you just have to find them.

yes but I can tow mine with my quad into places you will never get a "proper trailer" and it will also double as a meat cooler...… which is actually the main purpose of it.
we already have an 18ft R-Pod trailer that sleeps 4 comfortably and would rather not use it to haul meat

I just like making stuff and all of the material used came off the steel racks at the shop and cost nothing. Even the stainless sheets were left over from a big job so I repurposed them :)
Martin at Accubend in Langley gave me a smoking deal on the forming for the sheets. Welding wire and gas cost money , so do consumables like grinder wheels and cutting blades but overall the only thing I have spent any meaningful amount of money on building it is the axle and hub assembly from princess auto. Even the tent trailer was free when I got it but it had papers so was a good deal at the time.

I originally started this trailer project to tow behind a jeep YJ so is why I didn't look at premade toy hauler types. And it's main purpose is a meat cooler for hunting the early seasons. I chose the stainless so it would be a lot more bear proof than a typical trailer.

I use a 8x16 v-nose enclosed trailer for our moose hunting trip. I insulated the walls and ceilings with foam board, built shelves into the v-nose section, popped in a window. I use a Honda inverter generator running a oil heater all night and a mr.buddy heater to blast the heat before getting out of bed for a few minutes. Although not ideal but it’s makes it a 1 tow deal I can load all our hunting supplies in 1 trip. Included 2 ATVs and a plastic tub bush burro trailer to haul out our moose in halves all our cook gear, gas, sleep gear/cots pretty much everything we need for a moose hunt. unpack everything then We sleep inside it with the electric oil heater. Gonna have to insulate the floor this year try to keep more heat in.
