This coming fall I plan on moose hunting with few friends in WMU 12B in the Atikokan area. The place we are planning to stay out points out on the website that there are numerous logging roads and trails so the area is accessible by ATV. A couple of the guys have ATVs they are planning to take.

Any one familiar with any places around Toronto or North - on the way to Thunder Bay where one could rent a vehicle like a Polaris Ranger, Kawasaki Mule or a Kubota RTV? I've seen ATV rentals for 2-UP ATVs - quite expensive around here - $850 per week ++. Almost worth while looking for a used one at that price and calling it paid off after a few years. However something like a Ranger, Mule or RTV would be much more practical I think with a bed etc.

If any one knows where I might be able to rent one of these, drop me a line. I'd rather not tie up cash in more equipment than I need.

The folks up north are not going to rent you a machine any cheaper than down south. If you are going to need a ATV for hunting or trail riding yearly your idea of buying decent used one is your best option. If it is going to be a one time trip then pay the price and rent one. This is not like renting a car where the renters know it is being driven on nice pavement. When a dealer rents an ATV to a fella going moose hunting he knows it is going to driven in nasty places by fellas that are not likely to take the best of care it. So you pay heavily to rent such vehicles.

Just throwing an idea out there... maybe put an ad on Kijiji looking to rent?.... list the price you are willing to pay for the week and go from there?... FYI, I have a yamaha Rhino and strongly reccomend it.....

Good idea Brad. What did that Rhino set you back btw - which model? Seeing that I'm starting with the thought of renting perhaps I ought to start with a used ATV for $4k or so but the side by sides seem so much more useful.

Buy a used one, sell if after the hunt if you didn't like it enough. If you are careful you probably won't pay more than having rented.

Buy one of those cheap Chinese models, they should last a week on logging roads. Ive seen some priced pretty reasonable.

Some of the manufacturers used to offer a "resort lease" type program. You could lease the ATV/UTV for a year and return it in whatever condition, they didn't care, so long as it ran.

Cost of total payments was about 65% of new. :D

Probably better off buying a good used sled.. and then selling it later as an option..

Found place that rents around here:

They rent ATVs and UTVs. Can-Am UTV is $1450 a week. Honda 2-UP ATV is $849 per week.

I see a number of Polaris Ranges, Kawasaki mules etc. pop up for around $7k. Any particular brand or model I should avoid. I like the Kubota equipment as I have a Kubota tractor on my farm and have friends that have their UTVs. I don't think they are cheap though.

Guessing if I got a 2 person ATV I'd be looking for 400 to 500 cc -right? A UTV really does seem like the right solution to me with the bed and all. More useful around the farm here as I can load up my deer feed, apples whatever and go back to the trees stand with it.

So how about those Polaris Rangers, Yamaha Rhinos and Kawasaki Mules? I see them for $6-7k? 7 to 8 year old ones decent?
