Hunting Vehicles, Geo Tracker?

I guess my biggest concern at the moment is the I-4 Engine 8V, (my preference) is that enough for hauling some gear and game around some of the mountains we have here?
try and get one with the 16v engine if possible or one with an engine swap already done to something more powerful

Brian 46, nice sammy and sidekick, you have invested a bit of money on those. You did a nice job. I know what you mean about the sammy being a little tight for space and it is nice to get back in my p/u. For me, I still think the sammy is better than a quad or a side by side though.

Brian 46 and Pete Dobinson, great examples and good advice guys, thank you. The 2 doors do look a little small, but hell a fun. 4 door seems more reasonable. I'm still looking online and haven't found anything yet, went to see a couple in person / drive by. So I think I'm on the right track, its just a matter and time and money now lol.

Yeah, the sidekick has a trail tough trail slayer kit in it with Toyota axles with 5.27's, 4to1 transfer and E lockers front and rear. Currently putting in a 2.5L V6 out of a grand vitara.

Brent at Trail Tough is a good guy to deal with. I got my transfer case gears from him as well as new leaf springs, clutch and a few other goodies. Petro Works are also good to deal with. That V6 should give you lots of power, let me know how it works out.

The power on the Suzuki is fine, it's only good to have the extra power if you go on the highway but even then just stay at 100kp/h and there's no issue. The gearing on those thing is so low and they are so lightweight you do not need much power anyway. It's not worth the trouble of an engine swap in my opinion.

this was my brothers samurai I helped him build .
1.9l vw idi turbo diesel ,
Toyota 5 speed tranmision / transfercase
front and rear Toyota axles .
jeep yj springs
34 inch super swampers .

It depends on your tire size more than anything. My samurai had the 1.6 16 valve and with the 35's it was underpowered. The sidekick which is heavier but on 33"s wasn't any better.

Your really pushing that 1.3 at 100k p/h, even with the factory 27" tires. With 31" tires I couldn't get into 5th gear. Re-gearing the transfer case and an engine swap made my zuke way better. I'll probably re-gear the diffs as well at some point. Each to their own though, what ever works for you.

Up here in NE Alberta, most informed outdoormen give these Geo Trackers a pass.

Reputation of snapping axles with just a little bit of off road use.

With the stock tire sizes it is really difficult to snap axles. If you put a lift and big tires in one without upgrading the axles, well yes, anything will snap it's stock axles much easier

I had a '91 GMC Tracker 2-door that was awesome. Bone stock, it could go almost anywhere with good tires. Only problem was the exhaust would drag all the time and snap. I ended up getting rid of it for a song, foolishly.

I have a lot of fond memories of that rig, like the time I took my brother and two brother-in-laws for a fishing trip during bear season. All of us, all our fishing gear, all our camping gear, and my bear hunting gear, plus a canoe on top, rolling down the highway. An awesome weekend.

I'd buy another one, if I wasn't so impressed with the aftermarket for Wranglers. My next ride will either be a 4x4 light pickup, another Tracker, or a Wrangler. I hate driving a car.

How easily does that VW diesel link up to the tranny?
I've a 85 Rabbit TDI languishing under the trees, new injection pump...but a bent intake valve. Pondering if it's worth cracking open and repairing.
If it's an easy swap, might have to pull it and repair it. Turbo diesels are cool power plants

Tokguy. Try getting ahold of ACME diesel conversions out of Oregon, they do diesel conversions on samurai's. They use VW Rabbit diesels and should be able to give you the info you need. I think they sell a conversion kits as well. Check them out on the web.
