Hunting with 1-4,1-6,1-8 scopes

This is from an old Leupold brochure (1992) for the VX-3 1.5-5x20mm. The Leupold website currently states 11.6" at 100 yards on 5x for a VX-3i 1.5-5x20mm. :eek:

Mine is a VX-3 that is likely to have been manufactured within the past 5 years, range-confirmed as 11.6".

Easier to estimate range on a big Moose when it was 17.1". :p

Ok for an update guys. Today I made the trip to the closest hunting and fishing store near me, 1 1/2 hr round trip. I was going to look at a few different scopes and see how glass from different manufacturers match up to one another. I checked 1-4,1-6, 2-7,2-8, 2.5-8 scopes of at least 3 different brands. I ended up walking out with a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x 36 Duplex. It was a toss up between that unit and a VX2 2-7x32. I picked the VX3 based on the clarity and overall better image. The 2.5 min power setting was a bit higher than I wanted but it will still allow both eyes open shooting at low power. I spent more money than I wanted too but this will most likely be the last hunting scope that I buy. I will get it mounted in the next few weeks and post my opinion of it after shooting with it.

The VX-3 2.5-8x36 is a very nice hunting scope. I have the same on my 35 Whelen and it is just fine in the bush and also out in the open.

good choice but checking a scope in a store and not outside?

so an hold over of 5.8 inches for the lower portion ...
 
The VX-3i has a couple of upgrades over the VX-3 -

How do you manage range estimation and hold-over on shots > 300m?
 
Update: found a good deal on a new Bushy 4500 2.5-10x40. Like the glass so far. Gonna get it mounted soon.

Edit, sorry guys, forgot to mention that I fllipped the VX3. I didn't like the non resettable turrets and the old school locking ring for the eye adjustment. The Bushy has both those features and the glass is excellent. It's a fair bit larger physically than the VX3 however.

I like the Leupold 1.5-5x20 scopes.

As others have said, light transmission is not an issue with good quality glass & the human eye itself has its limits.
