Hunting with 2 guns

Here is Ontario when on the ATV I carry the 20 OU for partridge, plus the Ruger carbine in 44mag for the close in work plus the M-70 in either 300 H&H or 30-06 for the longer distance stuff. No worries as long as there unloaded. I always carry them cased to protect them.

It's called a drilling. Mine has 16ga.x16ga. over 7x57R barrels, and I have a .22 mag insert barrel in one of the shotgun tubes. Not just two, but three guns in one. Shot this deer with the 7mm and the grouse with the .22 on the walk back to camp. Or take off the claw mount scope ( instantly) and pull out the insert ( less than 1 minute job) and have a lively double barrel bird gun. I like mine a lot. It's a Krieghoff. Costs as much as three good guns, but worth it to me.

Very nice, the buck too.

What's the weight on the drilling. I have combo guns but would really like a second shotgun barrel for when I find some huns.

If it's legal where you are and you have a backstop, just head-shoot it with your rifle. Take scope height into account. I ran into the "wrong gun" situation this season and after some consideration, took a grouse's head off with a 200gr partition. It was the cleanest kill of the season.

Depending on your choice of rifle there are some options.

A Marlin lever(with micro groove barrel) can single shot load a Rem. 2.5 " .410 shotshell.

Or you could make your own shotshell from straightwalled case by placing small circle of cardboard on top of shot and doing a heavy roll crimp on end of brass.

There was a company called MCA Sports that made an adapter sleeve for 308,3006, and 303 so you could fire a .32 caliber pistol cartridge in your long rifle....never seen one or used one but imagine the range would be limited?

I love combo guns...

They are few and far between tho, especially a good one with the POA/POI "close" together for both barrels.

true, I gave up on all Savage and similar cheap combo guns long ago for that reason. Tried many. The best are made by Merkel, Sauer, Krieghoff, Heym, etc. in Germany. Good combo guns and drillings are available in Canada if you look, but are not common or cheap.

I often carry 2 guns. One slung for longer shots and one in my hands for quick close shots. Whether its my 458wm over my shoulder and my sxs 4570 in my hands or a 300wm on my shoulder and a jrc 9mm in my hands. Its not to difficult to manage. If a grouse rabbit coyote or wold pop up close or even a bear im ready and if i see one off aways or in a cut or across a pond i can swap guns quickly and easily

I’m hoping to pull this off next week with my Sauer drilling.

always love to see drillings in action. may take the plunge again.

I've taken this gun with me while muzzle loading or rifle hunting. I have taken birds home, but never a deer and bird. I won't shoot a bird when trying not to spook deer, but take a bird if I can when heading back.

the savage 42 is so light it wont bother you to have on your back.

Carried a wolf muzzle loader and my 870 during the controlled hunt for a couple seasons. The scoped wolf would shoot under 2 inches at 100m and the red dotted smooth bore 870 could put them all into a dinner dish at the same range, so took the first shot with the Wolf and follow ups if needed with 870. Worked well for a couple years, first morning of the first season I tried it I shot a big doe on the trot through the heart with the Wolf at about 110m.

Bought an A bolt in 12 gauge so it is the only controlled hunt gun I need now.;)
